Reading List: Winter 2015

I can't believe how long it has been since I have posted a reading/listening/watching list... I love doing this as it helps keep me "accountable" and if y'all are willing to share with me, it gives me ideas for future literary pursuits!

Disclaimer: Some of these are literary works with merit, others are purely for entertainment. I'm totally ok with a little "trash" once and a while... don't judge me : )!

On my Shelf:
  •  The Paradise of Glass by Pera Durst-Benning  - see the above statement, I read the other two in this historical fiction series, strong female characters and handcrafts got me hooked.
  •  A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki - suggested by a friend
  • The Martian - by Andy Weir - 'cause I heard it's great (though maybe I should listen to this instead?) I heard the movie is wonderful, but I always choose the book first when I can!
  • Trail of Broken Wings by Sejal Bandani - for when I am ready for a sad book again (see below) It keeps popping up, so it is on my list!
Just Finished:
  • Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews- my girl and I both read this this summer, super sad, and yet I laughed out loud a lot? That is confusing....
  • Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng - I'm not sure I can suggest this book, I spent the whole read with a giant lump in my throat, it just made me sad, and frustrated at clueless parents, and then melancholy again.
  • The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan - Don't judge me, the other two books I read above were SUPER depressing, and I needed a freakin' break!
Listening:
  • Fall of Giants by Ken Follet  - a historical fiction history lesson with a fair amount of "spicyness" thrown in to keep things entertaining....  30+ hours, which means alot of knitting time! There are two more in the series and then Pillars of the Earth after that! That's 107 hours of listening????? Clearly I'm glad I found them!
  • Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson - this is next up once I finish Fall of Giants, I listened to Let's Pretend This Never Happened Here more than once. Jenny is hysterical, and also kinda deep, I like that!
Watching:
What are you reading/watching/listening too?  I know I'm going to blow through this list and be looking for more as we head into winter! Let's help keep each other entertained!

  2. I just finished listening to Everything I Never Told You. Although it was depressing, it definitely held my interest and I thought it was a good, thought-provoking book.
Now listening to The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty and LOVING it!

  5. I loved the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series for pure escapism and now my daughter has me hooked on the Fox and OHare series by Evanovich and Lee Goldberg. Lots of fun. Of course, had to listen to the whole Diana Gabaldon Dragonfly in Amber series. That ate up a lot of hours.

My daughter also introduced me to the Kingkiller series by Patrick Rothfuss, a fantasy series. Loved the first two books but we have been waiting for the end of the trilogy for years! The Name of the Wind is the first book, 28 hours of listening. The Wise Man's Fear is book 2, 43 hours there. Not as violent as the name would suggest and kind of deep as well.

  10. I just finished reading Grisham's newest book, "Rogue Lawyer." Very different from his previous books, and yet I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days. I've always like J.K. Rowling, so I tried her new series written under the pen name Robert Galbraith. The third book is out, but I've only read the first two so far. Read those in order, as the characters and story line progress in chronological order. I'll read anything by John Sandford, C. J. Box, Craig Johnson, or William Kent Krueger to name a few; all are mysteries of sorts.

I'm catching up on the "Longmire" series on Netflix and also season 7 of "Doc Martin" is releasing a new episode every Monday on Acorn. Of course, PBS has me hooked every Sunday night with Masterpiece and generally whatever comes before and after.

  11. I just loved "All the Light We Cannot See" which I read this summer, searching around for the next great read. Don't know if you can find it as a true audio book, but my absolute favorite from cassette in the car for road trip days was "Mr Beethoven Lives Upstairs"

  13. We all enjoyed listening to the Martian audio book. We loved all the details. The movie was good but the details were skimmed over (or it would have been 8 hours long.) But if you read the book, they did little references to things in the movie that you might miss otherwise. The movie was good but different. I would recommend listening to the book, then seeing the movie.

  14. My latest listen was/is a series of books by Chris Colfer (Glee TV show fame). The first book is: The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell. The series is about two children who travel between our world and the Fairy Kingdom. Very interesting twist on fairy tales. Some people do not like Chris's reading of the books, but after I listened for awhile I really enjoyed his voices of the characters. Red Riding Hood being my favorite. And FINALLY an explanation of why there are so many Prince Charmings. My other all-time favorite book to listen to was The Book Thief. The narrator is outstanding on this one.
