Silk Road Socks- A Giveaway!
Howdy Y'all! Guess what? It's time for a giveaway, and this is one I am REALLY excited for!!!
I've been anxiously awaiting the release of Hunter Hammersen's first book, Silk Road Socks. I've had the honor to work with Hunter on two sock designs she did for Schaefer Yarn and LOVE her sock aesthetic and pattern writing skills. Hunter paired herself with Cooperative Press (KnitGrrl's new publishing company) and together they released a book that is cohesive, well written, organized and freakin' GORGEOUS... just look:
Gordes
Salor
Khotan
Cooperative Press and Schaefer Yarn have graciously agreed to give away one electronic copy of Silk Road Socks along with a skein of Schaefer Yarn Nichole in Chamomile (the exact yarn used to knit Khotan, above) to the lucky winner! Just leave a comment by Sunday Feb 6th (at midnight) sharing with us all why you love to knit socks! If you link, tweet, ravelry, or facebook the giveaway I'll enter you twice, just let me know you did.... please remember to leave your contact info!
I leave you with a blurb from the back cover of Silk Road Socks:
If you’ve ever dreamed of being whisked away on a magic carpet to a
land where you could knit stunningly beautiful socks all day…well, we
can’t quite make that dream come true. But we can supply you with sock
patterns to knit if you ever do get there!
What fab socks!!sm
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks because it's so much fun to play with stitch patterns on a small canvas, and before long you have a finished object that people *love* to get as a gift. :)
ReplyDeleteThis book looks like it has some really gorgeous designs!
Sock projects are portable, relatively quick -- and it's fun giving them as gifts!
ReplyDeleteI like to knit socks because I love having a beautiful piece on my feet. They feel so good and my poor sore tired feet feel loved, even though I abuse the heck out of them running. I'm moevans on Ravelry.
ReplyDeleteI like to knit socks because they are good way to explore new techniques on a relatively small canvas - and the results can be quite stunning! I'm addicted.
ReplyDeleteSocks are portable knitting and when they're finished you have a wearable piece of art, esp. when you've used yarn like Schaefer's! Plus, they're a great canvas for trying new designs!
ReplyDeleteI love to knit socks because they're portable projects that can be worked on in bars. :-P
ReplyDeleteI like knitting socks because that means I have a small project that I can just grab on my way out the door. Sock knitting has saved me from hours of boredom waiting at doctors' offices, for my husband at a woodworking store, etc. This looks like a lovely book and I would be happy to win it and the yarn.
ReplyDeletefor me knitting socks is portable knitting. I always have a pair or two on the needles and going so that when I'm on the train to work, on a break, in a car, or just have a spare 5 minutes, I can pull it out and knit a few rounds. This is my year for knitting socks and you'd be surprised the time you can find to knit them - 3 1/2 pairs into the new year :-)
ReplyDeleteI loved my first pair of hand-knit socks so much that my fiancee asked me to knit him a pair. he was jealous...I'm about to start my next pair. I love warm feet!

ReplyDeleteThey're portable, perfect for learning new techniques, (usually) wearable even if you mess them up, and can be made in such lovely colours and yarn bases that they make the knitting a joy - and feet happy!
ReplyDeletei'd love a new sock book for my birthday, thank you laura for giving one away to a luck winner! Hope it's me, cause it's my birthday.
ReplyDeleteI love to knit with beautiful hand-dyed or handspun yarns, and a small project like socks makes that affordable! Also, hand knit socks keep my feet cozy and warm in our Canadian winters.

I love to knit socks because
ReplyDelete1. They're portable, and I always have one with me to work on!
2. I can make a pair with 400 yds/100gms so I can afford to use really fabulous yarns to work with, vs making a sweater that might take 18 skeins and the grocery budget! ;-)
Socks are so portable and there are so many possibilities available when knitting socks -- with what feels like less time commitment than a sweater.
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks for two reasons:
ReplyDelete1. I love WEARING handknit socks.
2. They are portable projects I can knit anywhere, and even the most complicated ones are usually memorizable.
(I'm siercia on Ravelry)
IMHO, one of the nicest things you can do for yourself is take care of your tootsies. What better way than to cover them with handknit goodness!?!?

I love knitting socks because the construction is so fun!
ReplyDeleteOne of the best reasons I have for knitting socks is that I can make them for my dad. He's one of those folks who just doesn't need or want much but I have found that I can knit him sleep socks and he wears them all winter long. Win!
ReplyDeleteYay! Me, me!
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks- especially since I learned how to do 2 at a time :)
ReplyDeleteI have feet so I love socks on my feet. The book looks fun.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win Hunter's book and the yarn! I also tweeted about it. I'm yarnintercept on Twitter too. (My email is yarnintercept at gmail dot com)
ReplyDeleteI like to knit socks because they are (usually) a one ball project. No huge investment in money or yarn space, very portable, and such a personally satisfying result.
ReplyDeleteI love sock yarns & how fast socks knit up. They are so much fun!
ReplyDeleteI love socks b/c they are a small design canvas.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I Raveled in the Corvallis Ravelers group.
ReplyDeleteI have recently gotten back into my love for making socks.... I think it is because I can use such pretty yarn and it only takes one skein!!! And now that I can use a needle bigger than US000... like bacos on a salad - even better.
ReplyDeleteSchaefer and Hunter
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect combination of Styles!
I love doing socks because they are small and portable and they are also like little pieces of art with all of the endless patterns!
ReplyDeleteBeen to Mongolia; knit with the camels; mittens and socks are my 2011 passions

ReplyDelete1. of the different parts...top, heel, toe, each is sort of milestone for progress.
2. lots of fun yarns to choose from
3. small and portable
4. and you can never have too many!
abycat3@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteI love to knit socks for so many reasons: They are so comfortable to wear, portability, it is fun to try new designs on such a small space, you can send so much love in gifted hand knitted socks. The most important reason though is that there is so much magic in the process. It is always a wonder to complete a sock and put it on. The book and yarn look amazing!

I'm new to sock knitting and still have the first pair on the needles, and I'm getting more and more inspired by all the patterns out there. A gorgeous book like this would be so motivating and inspirational.
ReplyDeletebobandlauramayotte@comcast.net
I love to knit socks because of the magic of the heel turn, the near-instant gratification, and for the way I feel when I wear a pair of these works of art!
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks because they're quick, portable, and I can still knit in the summer when it's too hot to knit anything else.
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks since they are really the most wearable knit item - they can be worn everyday from Fall until Spring. Also, the sock yarn available to buy is so darn irresistible.

ReplyDeleteTammy
I love knitting socks because they're portable, they let me play with color and patterns in ways I wouldn't otherwise feel free to do, and they make well loved gifts!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I do a lot of knitting and designing I am only just getting into knitting socks. I actually knit them while I ride my exercise bike in the evenings, and so the time workingout goes quickly and I still get to knit! This new book looks lovely with some really great projects.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful book and BEAUTIFUL yarn ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe skinny yarn and tiny needles are well worth the effort - always feel so clever when I look at my finished pair of socks.
ReplyDeleteI like knitting socks because they are great on-the-go knitting. Not to mention all the great yarn/pattern combinations. gidgettm on ravelry
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks with simple yet elegant patterns; my ensemble doesn't feel complete without a pair of pretty socks!
ReplyDeleteI think sock yarn is my main attraction to sock knitting. It seems to bring out the creativity in yarn designers and dyers.
ReplyDeleteFabulous giveaway! I love knitting socks for the portability and the confidence they give you as a knitter. If you just read a sock pattern it often seems like there is no way it will work (but it does!) and then if you add cables / patterns / more details it's just amazing. Nothing feels so good on your feet!
ReplyDeleteI've tweeted this too! (nutmegknitter)
These socks are beautiful! I have to learn to make socks!
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks, because they let me knit with "tiny" yarn", give me hours of pleasure to try new patterns and techniques and are VERY portable. I love Hunters designs and look forward to see this book soon.
ReplyDeleteSocks are the perfect portable project, and great to wear too! (I tweeted about the giveaway also.)
ReplyDeleteThese designs look delicious! (I retweeted as @knitonepurltoo)
ReplyDeleteTotally entering this - Hunter's pretty book AND a yarn called Chamomile?! I have a chamomile thing, what can I say...

ReplyDeleteI like to knit socks because it allows me to buy pretty sock yarns. There are so many choices and most only take one skein. That could be the reason why I have so much.
ReplyDeleteLove socks! They're the ultimate portable knit-while-waiting-on-kids project. And, where else do you get to utilize so many techniques in such a small space!

ReplyDeleteKnitting socks is how I pamper myself... from selecting the yarn, to choosing the pattern, to the pleasure of actually knitting them, and then finally the reward of wearing them on my feet.
ReplyDeleteAvalanche on Ravelry.
I love knitting socks because they are a universal comfort, a clothing item shared and understood by so many different cultures. Socks are what unites us- it crosses all boundaries of color, race, sex, religion, politics and sexual orientation. This is why I love to knit socks!
ReplyDeleteI love to knit socks because I love sock yarn, simple as that :-)
ReplyDeleteI love to knit socks because no matter how funky the design or color, homemade socks are always in style.

I love to knit socks because sock yarn and patterns are so lovely and I get ususal clothing items when done.

I love knitting socks because they are the perfect sized project for me and because handknit socks are awesome. I would love to make a drawer full of magic carpet socks!
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks because they're the perfect size as a take-along public transit project. And I can knit them standing up (which is sometimes necessary with London transport!).
ReplyDeleteI love socks because they can be more wild, ridiculous, or garish than, say, a sweater. I totally wear variegated socks in rainbow colors but I would never wear such a sweater. Socks are like a fun secret tucked in your shoes!
ReplyDeleteI don't like to knit socks. But I'm trying very hard to get over myself about this. And just knit some socks. This book might help, I think. (you can look on my rav project page, not a sock to be found)
ReplyDeleteKnitting socks is fun because of the great variety of patterns on a small canvas.
ReplyDeleteOh, wow - Reynaud's runs in my family so all the women and some of the older men alllll get the coldest feet in the winter!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm the only sock knitter in the family.... 0.0
BTW, I'm retweeting this over at my Twitter and also posting it to my FB.
I retweeted your contest! @lorindahayes
ReplyDeleteI just started knitting socks and so far, I'm really enjoying it. They're SO much more comfortable than store-bought socks that now it's hard to put those on my feet.

ReplyDeleteAlso, my email address is morgan@mcfamilies.com, which I totally forgot to include in my previous post.
I love to knit socks because they're so quick to knit up and I feel like I've accomplished something fairly quickly. They're also really portable. Plus all the awesome yarn choices! I LOVE knitting socks! =)

ReplyDeleteTweeted your giveaway!
I love making handknit socks because I don't believe there is anything warmer or more comfortable that a well fitting knitted sock.
ReplyDeletepeatmoss83 on Ravelry
There is nothing better feeling than wearing handknit socks. Knitting socks allows you to try different techniques quickly. It's pretty easy to size socks. Sock knitting is super portible, and there is nothing as satisfying as knitting tiny stitches in a circle.
ReplyDeleteOverall, sock knitting completes me.
Socks are great! There are so many different patterns to choose from, and so many lovely yarns as well. The projects are a nice size to carry around, and so nice to wear when they're done.
ReplyDeleteSocks are the best. You get a portable project to take with you anywhere AND you can wear any kind of socks -- even sparkles or stripes!
ReplyDeleteLove those socks-Very classy!
ReplyDeleteliesef on Ravelry
What's not to love about knitting socks: little needles that don't hurt my hands, fantastic little yarns, can do two at a time and never have one-itus, and look at all the fantastic patterns out there!! Oh . . . and they feel divine. Would love, love, love to make these socks!! They're fantastic. xoxo
ReplyDeleteLOVE making socks. Could exclusively knit socks. That said, I would really use the gift! ;-)

I love to knit socks for myself and my husband, who has received great comments on his socks. And one of my sons has also become a convert. Though we live in Mississippi, we find that wool socks are truly comfortable all year round. Kathy (khoward1776@comcast.net)
ReplyDeleteI love to do different stitches, and love to learn new ways of knitting the heel and/or the whole sock.
ReplyDeleteI love to knit socks, they keep my feet nice and toasty during the wintertime and they make wonderful gifts.
ReplyDeleteI linked the giveway on my blog.
These days, I almost exclusively knit socks. I love the (almost) immediate gratification of having something to wear that I made within a week or so :) I also get an immense sense of satisfaction from giving away my socks to people that really appreciate them, and I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by knit-worthy folk. I am slowly replacing all of my store bought socks with hand knit ones :) It makes me very happy to open my sock drawer to see a riot of colour and texture. I'm hooked!
ReplyDeleteI will definitely be posting about your great giveaway over on Facebook, as I never pass up on an opportunity to share my passion for yarn :)
Thank you,
MayaMoonie (on Ravelry)
I love to knit socks because you can try really cool new stuff on a small canvas - lace patterns, new yarns, different techniques - and, for more practical reasons, because they are so comfy!
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks because they are so portable. Just a zip bag, yarn and needle (magic loop) and a copy of the pattern.(mgb at shaw.ca)
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks, and a full book of Hunter's socks is a dream
ReplyDeleteWow. I thought I had enough sock books but I sure would like this one. I have made about 20 socks and try to knit one a month. I learn techniques, gauge, get to buy an incredible different types of yarn and colors plus keeps my feet warm and cozy. Socks make me smile every day. rosevta@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI love sock knitting because that is one knitted thing that my husband and I can share. We have exactly the same size feet. So a pair of socks for him is a pair of socks for me! And he is so secure in his masculinity that he does not care if they are purple or have copious amounts of lace or what have you. He'll even wear them to work. He says it doesn't matter because his pants cover them anyways.
ReplyDeleteI suffer terribly if I don't have at least one sock on some needles somewhere near at hand, regardless of what else is on the go. Socks are essential knitting - portable, quick (well, relatively), and guaranteed to be useful and well-used. And these socks are lovely - I visited Turkenistan a few years ago (sort of working) and this has brought the memories straight back!
ReplyDeleteThe socks you've shown are FABULOUS. I like stitch-patterned work. I would so love to own these patterns! *Knitting needles are crossed.*
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks for many of the reasons already stated--portability being a biggie.
I discovered just how much I love knitting socks when a big burly guy friend shed tears over the ones I made for him. :)
I love learning new patterns and socks are perfect for this. Also they are very portable.
ReplyDeleteI love to knit socks because they are so portable and can knit anywhere!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the opportunity to win.

I love to knit socks because they're portable, rhythmic to knit, and then, when you wear them, you feel like you've given a most special treat to yourself! Socks are also the #1 item that my family (husband and two teenagers) actually ASK me to knit for them.
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks. They are small, you can use them as canvas for new patterns, they are warm on your feet. Plus they look stunning in stripes, solid colours and variegated yarns. And because there are so many colours to choose from, there's always a sock yarn in the colour you need/want!
ReplyDeleteJittina, the Netherlands
I love knitting socks because I have a ton of sock yarn, and socks are the most logical item to knit with it. Portability is also an important aspect of sock knitting, as I often knit with friends in groups, and socks are so much easier to transport to those groups than a sweater or a shawl. The main reason I love knitting socks is that I never get tired of the final result!
ReplyDeletei wuv knitting socks cuz i live in vermont & it's vewy cold here!

ReplyDeleteditetre(at)mac(dot)com
I love knitting socks because they allow me to explore a multitude of stitch designs, cast-on and cast-off techniques on a small canvas that ensures I finish my projects in a short time, giving great gifts to myself and others.
ReplyDeleteI've already targeted several gorgeous yarns to buy at my LYS Super Bowl sale that will look great in Silk Road designs.
How exciting... I liked the socks but when i got to the Khotan, I stopped and stared and coveted. How awesome it would be to win a skein of that yummy yarn. It sounds like a neat book.
ReplyDeleteshoot, sorry for not following directions.... I love to knit socks because it allows me to work on intricate things that are wearable. i don't wear a lot of shawls and other lace items - I'm not that type of person and usually don't have the stick-to-itness required. But socks I play a lot more, I experiment with colors I wouldn't wear as a shirt. And there is something pretty magical and a little more connected to the history of knitting to make socks - watching them go from a tube to a sock and knowing that hundreds of knitters before me have done the same thing. bigblueice on ravelry.
ReplyDeleteSocks are perfect commuting projects. I also like that I can test new stitch patterns out on a sock before committing it to a bigger project.
ReplyDeleteSock yarn is so affordable, every time I travel, I pick up a skein or two. When I wear my socks, I always remember the places I've been!
I love to knit socks because they travel well, are fun to knit and design, are finished quickly and feel great on my feet.
ReplyDeleteI love to knit socks as they are portable and you can play with intricate stitch patterns w/o too much investment.
ReplyDeleteI'm new to socks, having only knit 3 pairs, but I think the third time is a charm! I just don't want to stop! Beautiful patterns and beautiful yarns.
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks, because handknit socks feel amazing, soft, comfortable, perfect fit, and durable, and don't even get me started on designs, the designs are endless!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this fabulous giveaway!

I love to knit socks because it puts me in touch with a world of friends who are only a keyboard away. And I love to knit socks because I have a short attention span and am too fighty for sweaters.
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks because of the variety.... you can use just about any and every knitting technique to make a sock.
ReplyDeleteSocks are the perfect portable project for the knitter who's always on the go.
ReplyDeleteSocks are easy to manage while knitting in different places, easy and quick
ReplyDeleteI love the process of sock knitting but i especially love wearing hand knit socks. putting on a pair of socks that i knit starts my morning with a smile.
ReplyDeleteWhy do I love to knit socks? Because I'm afraid that I would shrivel up and die if I ever stopped!
ReplyDeleteI love to knit socks because they are small and portable, instant gratification, soft on the fingers, and oh so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI haven't figured out yet why I love to knit socks, but I do know that I'm totally addicted - I'm either knitting socks or thinking about knitting socks (I actually even dream about it!)
ReplyDeleteI tweeted the giveaway: @Knitted Brow

I love wearing socks that I've knit in interesting patterns with interesting yarns. I think my friends look at my feet first - not my sweater or jeans or coat! It's fun to brag.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many reasons I love knitting socks! I love tiny needles, knitting in the round (instead of back and forth), only needing one skein of yarn (yay stashing!), being able to take my knitting anywhere, and how quickly they knit up, but the number one reason is that I also love wearing handknit socks.

I love knitting socks because they are a containable challenge. I can push the boat out on the technicality, but still have a fighting chance of success. I also get to be smug when people spot their beauty and admire them. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love wearing handknitted socks for the comfort and lack of constriction
What's not to love about knitting socks? The lovely yarn in amazing colors and textures, the endless patterns, the portability and the beauty of the finished product to show off.
ReplyDeleteI get a huge amount of satisfaction from knitting socks. Watching the heel turn and the foot form is so awesome! I just heard an interview about this book and would love to have it!
ReplyDeleteLove the portability and the (relatively) instant gratification!
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks because they're portable, relatively inexpensive (there's a lot of entertainment value for the money), and something everyone can use.

My sister, my niece and I have formed our own sock club. We chose 6 patterns but the hardest decision was to limit ourselves to 1 from Silk Roads and which one??!! So excited to see this book.
ReplyDeleteLove the feel and warmth of hand knit socks, so I knit socks! It's a practical way to pamper your feet. Plus, in the middle of winter, there is nothing like a good wool sock to keep warm!

ReplyDeleteI have a skein of Nichole that I haven't found the right pattern for yet. Maybe it's in Silk Roads? This is one sock book I don't have in my library yet!
ReplyDeleteI love to knit socks because my daughter says her favorite things are: a good book, a cat on your lap and socks your mom knit you on your feet.

Oh My! Look at those photos!!! I'll cross my fingers for good luck.
ReplyDeleteSocks are great. I really love knitting socks. It's something we wear all the time, my kids and husband love them too (with sweaters they get too hot... my hot blooded side of the family!) but socks, keeps them warm. They go fast (if I need to make a gift), I love trying new patterns, I love knitting in double pointed needles... they are great!
Thanks for the chance!

I love to knit socks because they are portable, beautiful and challenging. The many sock yarns available make it a dream just to imagine different color/yarn/pattern combinations, and to actually work them up ... I'm getting giddy just thinking about it!! I would love to win a copy of this book!
ReplyDeleteI've only knitted one pair of socks so far - looking forward to trying some more complicated ones next time! ^_^

ReplyDeleteThis book has such wonderful patterns. I'm looking forward to obtaining a copy, and if I could win one, that would be even better. Thanks for providing the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI've only finished my very first pair of socks a couple of weeks ago, but can totally see why they're addictive! Besides, handknit socks provide a great excuse to buy shoes to show them off!! And, somewhere stumbling through the internet, I found info about the Silk Roads book, and went nuts over the patterns ... absolutely gorgeous, and I want all of them!
ReplyDeleteLove the yarn and the book!

ReplyDeleteI purchased the e-book and I love the gorgeous designs. I'm looking forward to stash diving and perhaps a purchase or two of yarn for these beauties! Would love a hard copy of the book, but for now I'll settle and get one of these lovelies on my needles!

ReplyDeleteI like to knit socks because they let me try fancy patterns on a small scale so if it doesn't work out it's not a huge loss. And there are so many wonderful hand dyed sock yarns to try it's lots of fun!
ReplyDelete(thanks for reminding me to enter this drawing at the Knitting Etc superbowl party!)
