FibreSpace Inspired: A Miss Babs Giveaway!

Thanks so much for the Kable Kuff love this week... I'm thrilled that you love it's simplicity and elegance!
Over the weekend I was lucky enough to teach at Fibre Space.  Nestled right in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Fibre Space is chock-full of yarn and goodies that are hard to find.  Danielle, the owner has done an AMAZING job making her store unique.  My classes were SO FUN!  Peels of laughter, loads of learning, and even some tender moments occurred as Fibre Space's intrepid knitters discovered the joys of knitting with beads.  I got to meet knitters from my Ravelry group who have been participating for years... KnitFoolDeirdre even brought me Whoppers (one of my FAV's) and Michele gifted me a gorgeous skein of her hand-dyed yarn!  Swoon!  There was also a fair amount of enabling... I noticed my students slipping away for a bit to take a break in the shop downstairs and coming back loaded with goodies.  It was pretty comical!

I had to do some shopping too. I got some yarn from Fibre Company for the book that I cannot wait to work with. Right before I left on Sunday I saw a HUGE basket on the floor of Miss Babs "Yummy Toes"! Yummy Toes has 133 yards on it, just enough to make a Latus!  Before I knew it I was piling up skeins I had to have!  The staff caught the bug from me and chose skeins as well... then they asked me to go across to the street and find matching beads for them, which I just had to do!  I can't wait to see their Latus's (Latusi?) take shape... I know Arthelea has already cast on!
After such a wonderful weekend I was feeling the love... so I decided to get you some yarn too! I bought two skeins of Yummy Toes, and matched them with beads for you to make a Latus of your own!  Wanna see?
Two commenters will win:
  • 1 skein of Miss Babs Yummy Toes
  • 40 grams of matching beads
  • Pdf pattern for Latus
Latus is a garter stitch wedge scarflette, with beaded accents... since it uses just over 100 yards you can get this puppy knit in time for the holidays!
How's your holiday crafting?  Leave a comment sharing with us how it's going.... I'd love to hear what you are up to.  I'll leave comments open through December 10th, and chose a winner on the 11th!  Don't forget to leave a way to get in touch with you!

  1. It's going pretty well, only one cowl to finish but I was gentle with myself this year and didn't plan a lot of gift knitting. This, however, would make a lovely gift for my sister.

  2. Wow, that Latus is gorgeous. I am not really doing much holiday crafting, just a series of striped headbands in school colors for my daughter's sorority sisters. Latus would be a perfect opportunity for me to knit for a dear coworker. I have knit many holiday gifts in the past, but just finished a long span of baby knitting--so now it's me time!

    I might be in trouble.

  10. I'm not doing much holiday knitting. I am in a Ravelry swap this month, so I need to knit up a few little goodies to put in the package.

  11. You have such a gift for picking beads. I just finished my Ruffled kit and I love it. No - that one won't be a gift, but I will make a few for gifts. More to knit, more to knit. But love this pattern and would love to win that yarn!

  17. Your yarn and beads or my yarn and beads ... I will definitely be making a Latus for me ... and maybe more as gifts for next year.

    It was so great meeting you in person - the classes really were fun and we learned a lot. My knitting is fun ... between my new love of Mudra Cuffs and icord ... and yarn bombing - it's all kinds of fun ranging from sparkling with lace, to acrylic to hold up to the weather outdoors ... Oh, and an oranment filled with knitting, too.

    Your (not always, and hopefully not for much longer) soft spoken friend.

  20. Ah hahahahah! Holiday knitting? I'm still catching up from last month! I do have one cowl done and I'm working on a pair of leg warmers, but whatever I get done, I get done. I'd like to make something for the new grandbaby-on-the-way....
    The Latus would be perfect for my mom and the colors you picked are gorgeous!

  21. I've done 2 hats with matching scarves and a Christmas stocking already and am now working on socks for my DH. All Christmas gifts.
    I've actually also dyed some lovely Merino yarn in a gradient and wanted to knit a Stellanti for myself, but maybe in the New Year that will come to be. I'd love to have the Latus kit as a next-in-line for myself as well.

  22. I would love to win the Latus kit and it would be for me. I am working on a Pavement scarf (Jared Flood) for my son and it is slow going - I am starting to think that the elves are unraveling it after I go to bed. I have two hats I would like to start and I have two shawls to block - maybe I can delay Christmas for a month. Janie

  23. Super pretty pattern, yarn and beads! My holiday knitting is, er, not quite going yet - gave up working on some Christmas socks to make a beaded shawl for myself instead...lol!

  30. You are so good at putting beads and yarn together. Coordinating is the word. I was going to say you are good at matching, but that's not it. I always match things up, but you coordinate brilliantly. I am knitting a few small things for Christmas, but mostly I am working on a cardigan for myself! I am SareBearKnits on ravelry!

  35. My Christmas crafting - well, it goes like this:
    Terry and Donna want a pair of socks (of course they can be just whipped up in a couple of days ... right?);
    Sean wants a sweater (knit in the yarn exactly like the picture ... how old is that book?);
    Kristina, Shawn, Jim, Mirna, and JJ want slippers (piece of cake...);
    Janet would really appreciate it if I would knit up a pair of those crocodile slippers because she wants to see what they look like and maybe she would even pay me to make some more (of course they can also be whipped up in a day);
    and Michael and Faryn would like an afghan for their king size bed (so there is no chance of one hogging it all to themselves; you can do that right Mom?);
    and they all gave me their lists the end of November.
    Now add to all that my boss said there is work that has to be completed ASAP, which requires working the weekend and going out of town part of next week.
    My Christmas crafting is showing potential of becoming some all nighters with the possibility of a couple of IOU's.
    Deep breath. Eat the elephant one bite at a time.
    One pair of socks done; 1/2 of the next pair done.

  44. I have been knitting Misti Alpaca/Merino Chunky stocking hats for my kids and husband. They are pretty and heavy for the low temperatures that will be coming in January and February. I have one more to make for my daughter's boyfriend. Both my daughter and her boyfrind do search and rescue for El Dorado County, CA. This time of the year, they get called out to find skiiers who ski out of bounds at the local resorts (Lake Tahoe area). As it always happens, skiiers are noticed missing after dark, so it is my daughter's job to go out at night, on cross country skis and snowshoes. It is cold and dangerous. So I want to get that last hat done for Xmas. I am also in the middle of less pressing project--a shawl, a sweater, a scarf. It is great to be busy!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well really it is going not so good. I planned to knit an afghan for my mum, and have had to rip it out twice. I want to get slippers done for the grand kids, but haven't even started. And sock for hubby. Plus I'd like a sweater for me. Not asking much, am I?

    So the scarf pattern would be just lovely for the other gifts I need to make!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I made a needle case for dpns for a good friend who has admired mine. I knit all year long but don't have any Xmas knitting specifically. Usually when the kids come home for the holidays they rifle through my finished objects drawer and ask if they see something they like. It works for me.

  53. Ok, so most of my Holiday crafts are sewn, not knitted. Does that still count? I have almost finished the ornaments for our group's Christmas Ornament exchange and have one Christmas gift left to finish (well let's be really honest here - I haven't started that one yet). The latus scarf is beautiful. In blue it would be just perfect for my best friend. In pink it would suit my Mum. Now that I have completed my Trapeze, I am trying to decide which one of Laura's patterns to knit next. Tough choice.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love that little scarf. It's so cute. And I'm a huge fan of Miss Babs. She is one of the nicest people you could hope to meet and her staff that goes to shows with her is amazing as well. A few years ago I picked up some Yowza in Plum, a monochrome, for a sweater at SAFF. I needed one more skein. I emailed Miss Babs and asked her if she had any on hand that she would be bringing to SAFF the following year. She pulled all her Plum for me and held it so I could match the skein to the ones I already had. Above and beyond! She's amazing.

    As far as holiday knitting, I'm making two small things this year. Matching socks for my three year old son and my husband. Because my little guy wants to be just like his Dada! I couldn't more proud that he wants to be like my husband. I'm a lucky woman.

  59. My next holiday crafting is going to be to create a "tree" for my very small apt. out of tree branches and decorate it with homemade ornaments using birch bark, acorns, pinecones, twigs woven into stars. I would like to place it in front of my window with a couple of salt lights, one on either side, to light it up at night.

  60. Well, I re-caught my knitting bug just last January and told myself I was making gifts for next Christmas. I made socks, scarves, hats, and then I signed up for your Lace Shawl classes. I loved them so much, I kept them for myself. I made TWO trapeze MKALs which will both be gifted, but they also raised the bar. I can't just give plain old knitting as gifts now. I have to have beads! So, after several Adorn Anew projects, I am close to having my Christmas list complete. Seems I am STILLl furiously knitting with less than 3 weeks to go! Yikes, where did the entire year go? Latus would be a wonderful addition to my stash of presents for all my family .... for NEXT Christmas!

  72. My goal was to knit 2 gifts for my 2 knitting buddies, that's it. I knew this since beginning of September. Doesn't sound too bad, does it? My only problem is that, back then, Christmas was sounding so far away and time flew by even faster I could realize and suddenly, I've got 20 days to knit 2 projects... And I didn't start yet (this week-end, I swear!). I'm not in panic mode yet, but it's coming ;)

  75. Hey Laura!

    What a cute beaded lovely! I have been knitting for several gifts and It's funny how once you start you don't want to stop gift giving, especially while knitting I dream up what else could be made from my stash. I spun up a chunky single and plied with some thread for a cowl the other night on a whim and I keep plugging away at a kitty pi bed and a hand-dyed and spun triangle scarf. Still sorting out who to give what based on the results.

  77. how is my holiday knitting going? Well my husband had Heart valve replacement on Nov. 14th causing us to cancel for the second time our Dec.1 vacation to see our 2 children and six grandchildren. So I have been working on some ear flap hats that my daughter requested. Then I saw this great cable kuff and of course I wanted it. I think my daughter and daughter in law and Goth granddaughter here in Tampa would love one in Black. How about my step daughter? We of course have pared down our gift list to nothing-- trying to make ends meet-- this is the second hospitalizion in six months. I am doing my best to add a little 'home made' cheer. It also is my Birthday today, and I always put out my St. Nicholas boot as a child! Happy holidays to all!!

  126. Beautiful scarf! My holiday knitting is at a minimum this year. Life got in the way starting in March & hasn't let up since BUT, I have managed to make a couple of scarves & have a couple more to go. They are for my secret sister & my 3 granddaughters. The grandsons will get cash as they all love to buy their own items - only 7 grandson to worry about there. Can't afford the oldest two that have already graduated from high school
    :-(

    I really hope my children STOP giving me more grandchildren to love - just kidding!!!! They are all precious.

This Nelkin project is just like the others - beautiful. I have both sets of patterns that I purchase and that is my goal for next year - beaded projects. I already plan to make the beaded cuffs for my knitting ladies for next year. Happy holidays everyone.

  136. Holiday knitting/beading going slower than anticipated - might have something to do with the work/knitting ratio... One shawl finished, one to finish up. Would love to work up some mittens (with beads, of course), and a giraffe, a nechlace, and a pair of socks before Christmas... but the calendar isn't cooperating! :-) LOVE your scarf! But, I love all your designs!

    Laura, I'm becoming a Nelkin pattern aficionado, and the Latus pattern, yarn and beads will be a great addition to my growing collection! Skywalker, Clarus, Mudra, Ribband, and now Latus! I don't like making plain scarves -- this is a nice clean and pretty twist on the traditional scarf and I would love to win it! Happy Hanukah and Merry Christmas! Kathy

  146. As I began holiday knitting a while back, I'm progressing quite nicely -- several projects done, a few still in process, some in planning stage despite timing! I had to laugh about your sock gift story -- last year I began a pair of socks for my father for Christmas... they needed to be mailed... they weren't done... I took a photo of them (at that point I was trying to knit 2 at a time, to avoid the dreaded "one more to do" syndrome) and I enclosed a note saying they'd come soon. Well... I did mail them off last summer, after having switched to knitting one at a time! And of course, throughout, I was continuing to work on "a million" other projects at the same time -- both the fun and the challenge of this knitting obsession! Happy Holidays!

  151. The Latus is beautiful..it would go great with my collection of Nelkin patterns! hee hee.....

    I finished a beret for my mother..lacey on top..out of camel/wool blend yarn from yore...been saving that softy for years. It's beautiful. Daughter asked for a beanie out of some "ugly" yarn...I knit out of one of my cashmere blends..BIG MISTAKE..why are daughters so fussy??? she wants the yarn with no color ..ugghh.

    It would be nice if I finished hubby's and son's socks! ok..I would rather knit sparkly, beaded things...
