Sunshine and Stitches: Discover 12 Delightful Summer Sweater Knitting Patterns

Summer is around the corner, and that means it's time to put away those bulky wool sweaters and pick up some lighter yarns to create the perfect summer sweater.

While the weather might be warming up, that doesn't mean we have to stop knitting. Cool summer evenings and overly air-conditioned spaces demand a lightweight hand-knit layer.

I've rounded up some of my favorite summer sweater patterns that were designed specifically for staying cool and comfortable without sacrificing style. And of course, Lola (my alter ego) felt compelled to share her opinion on each pattern, keep an eye out for those! Whether you prefer long-sleeve, short-sleeve, or tank-top knits, there's something for everyone.

For those really hot days, we've got tank tops! Bling, Solar, and Jamie Lee each offer a unique look but are all comfortable and stylish. If short sleeves are more your preference, check out Solar T, Janet Leigh, Novel T, and Pacificus DK. These patterns are all designed to keep you cool while still providing a bit of upper arm coverage. And for knitters who still want the coverage of a long-sleeved sweater, I've included La Jefa and Las Cruces. These patterns use breathable yarns and open stitch patterns to keep you comfortable in the warmer weather, even with longer sleeves.

So, grab your needles and yarn and enjoy this summer round-up!

Short Sleeves

Ceci T

Ceci T

A seamless tee with elegant turned hems and a breezy attitude. Worked in the round from the bottom up and knit at a loose gauge, this top is light, drapey, and perfect for layering across seasons. Originally designed for a cruise to South America, it’s got that effortless-chic look that travels well—whether you're seaside or sidewalk.

The faux side panels and raglan yoke flatter every angle, but the neckline the pièce de résistance: a built-in necklace thanks to a sprankle of beads. It's a built-in necklace that catches the light just so. Want contrast? Go color-blocked. Want elegance? Keep it monochrome. You can even tweak the neckline with short rows for a more fitted feel—or skip them for a laid-back boatneck. Ceci T also comes with size-specific stitch maps, making the yoke a total breeze to knit.

Bling T

Bling T

Inspired by Bling Tank, this T-shirt version is the perfect blend of comfort and elegance, designed to keep you looking chic. Bling T is seamless and worked in the round from the bottom up. It starts with turned notched hems, which add sophistication and room for your hips, while the faux side panels create a flattering silhouette.

Bling T has a raglan yoke construction that incorporates a bespoke pre-strung bead mix worked at the front of the sweater. If you prefer a more fitted neckline, you can knit optional short rows. For those who love a relaxed and casual look, skipping the short-rows gives you a slick boatneck. Both necklines are finished with an attached I-Cord edging.
