Tips and Tricks for Knitting with Sequins

Last December, I stumbled across Dana’s sequin-filled holiday sweater, and I knew I had to design something with it for my small knitted kit club, Lola’s Choice. The way those sparkles caught the light — how very Lola!

So I went on a mission to find the perfect sequin yarn to make Lola's bling dreams come true. After some searching, I found a supplier and ordered more yarn than I ever have in one shipment. Go Bling or Go Home!

And that's how the Blingola Collection was born!

Blingola Scarf

Blingola Scarf is worked tip to border, you’ll start with just a few stitches — and quickly get acquainted with your sparkly new yarn. With my favorite boomerang shaping, this wearable scarf goes with everything, including a turtleneck and jeans OR your fav LBD (little black dress). Need something to throw on for a holiday party? I’ve got you!

Blingola Shrug

Blingola Shrug is an asymmetric cowl with a modern funnel neck. Who doesn’t need a bling-filled holiday season? Blingola Shrug is worked top-down in the round with a turned hem at the neck and short row shaping to create the asymmetry. Adorn those shoulders with some shimmer.

Lola's Book Thong

Lola's Book Thong is my alter-ego, Lola’s favorite bookmark. The perfect little sparkle bomb for your latest page-turner or book group besties. Y’all have been asking me to design one of these for over a year, and clearly, I was waiting for just the right yarn to make your dreams come true!

All three patterns are available, as well as kits in my shop. There are six different colors to choose from, so you can pick the one that speaks to you (or, get a few—they're perfect for a holiday gift). Supplies for these kits are limited! Once they're gone, they're gone.

Working with sequin yarn is easy, and here are my top three tips to make your sequin knitting experience a joyful one.

Three Tips for Knitting with Sequins

1. Always work at a loose gauge

If your stitches are too tight, the sequins can't slide through. Use a looser gauge so your sequins can really sparkle.

2. Pop your sequins to the front as you knit

As you're working, use your index finger to give each sequin a little nudge into place. Push them through to the side where you want them to show—this ensures they're sitting pretty on the right side of your fabric.

3. Trim sequins from your tails before weaving in ends

Before you weave in those yarn tails, carefully cut off (or slide off) any sequins. This keeps your ends neat, tidy, and snag-free.

What Will You Make with Sequin Yarn?

Now that you've seen the Blingola Collection and read through my top tips, I'm curious—what sequin project are YOU going to make? I have a Tasca Vest  on my needles that I affectionately call my
“Festi-Vest”! I've been eyeing this simple skirt pattern that would look stunning with a subtle shimmer.

Whether you're ready to do some holiday knitting or just want to add a little extra sparkle to your closet, Blingola is a joy maker for your needles!

So, what do you say? Ready to get your bling on?
