Brioche Topper : A New Hat!
Anybody ready for some gift knitting? I know I am! I've been saving this pattern for you.... it's quite a fun and fast one!
Brioche Topper
I worked Brioche Topper in Freia Fibers Freia Ombré Worsted... what is SUPER fun about this design is that you get the appearance of two colors by working from the inside and outside of the ball... but really, you are just working with one gradient ball of yarn! Tricksy, right?
I discovered this technique when playing with the yarn in Brioche Booster, and realized I could translate it into a hat, which is great for learning brioche in the round. What I LOVE about Brioche in the Round, is that there are only 2 rnds to work, and once you have the pattern established you are good to go! Of course, I made a tutorial for you if you haven't worked Brioche in the Round before....
You've probably also seen some photos of me lately wearing a slightly different version of Brioche Topper, my new winter hat!
I pretty much wear my hair in a messy bun or ponytail ALOT of the time, so I needed to leave a hole at the top! I've included instructions for how I did this in the pattern... and put notes up about this version on its project page.
To celebrate releasing Brioche Topper I have a skein of Freia Fibers Freia Ombré Worsted in Flare! WHO WANTS IT?
Just leave a comment below letting me know how your gift knitting is going. Don't forget to leave a way to get in touch with you... I'll keep comments open through November 25th and announce the next winner in a giveaway on November 26th! It's time to get into the holiday spirit with y'all!
WINNER ANNOUNCED HERE!

Wow...more holiday knitting now with this great pattern release. I'll just add it to my list...xox
ReplyDeleteSweater started, another still debating size, and some decorations in planning stages. Heartwise
ReplyDeleteI’m a little behind, but I’m doing HATS this year. This one is perfect. I’ve got 3 little grannies, two big grandies, and three kids plus spouses, do and myself. Eek!
ReplyDeleteI find myself with insufficient time to attempt knitting gifts for anyone this year. Still, I wouldn’t want anyone to feel neglected. Therefor I am enacting Plan NoKnits4U2017. I will spend the next several weeks carefully arranging arguments and fights which will effectively distance me from friends or relatives who might otherwise expect me to knit for them.
ReplyDeleteNow, this may seem like it would reduce the number of gifts I myself receive. Worry not, dear reader. Nothing they would have given me will match the sweater I’m knitting for myself.
Seriously, I am planning on some slippers for Mom, but that’s it.
Genius!!!!!!
DeleteHi Laura !!! Iam running behind with holiday gift knitting! I am thinking some knits may need to become birthday presents instead! This is always the case. I am taracronk on ravelry.
ReplyDeleteI am sure I can find someone who would love to have this hat and as I have never tried brioche before this would be a win win.
ReplyDeleteKatbrown on Rav
This is an exciting hat and the yarn would be perfect for it. A wonderful Christmas gift for a special person. Margaretlake on Ravelry
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this hat--have been wanting to make a hat for my son's girlfriend and this could be the one. Have been doing gifts as I go, and if they are done for the holidays, so be it. On track for a sweater for my daughter...the rest might be belated holiday!
ReplyDeleteJerseyShoreDeb on Ravelry
I loved seeing this on you at Knit Ithaca! I'm still way behind with Christmas gifts but it's the thought that counts, right?
ReplyDeleteI want to make my daughter a hat. She always complains that I'm making shawls for myself, but I did give her brioche booster cos she loved it.
ReplyDeleteCrazylace54 on ravelry
My gift knitting is so far behind I probably will have to shorten the list. Today we were all given overtime, so even less knitting time. At lest the biggest item is finished.
ReplyDeleteBoth my daughters soul love ponytail hats. Is that a bit of orange I see?
Chari on Ravelry
i do not knit too many gifts but 3 out of for a started but nowhere close to finish. the panic has not settle in yet, but it is coming!
ReplyDeleteI am thinking about the hole for ponytail hat. I love all of your patterns. I want to knit them all. I love the "surprise" each time you post a new pattern for all of us to knit. I always have been thinking what is your next new pattern looks like. I am like how did you got the idea to create the new knitwear. You are quite creative. Sometimes some of the pattern I was like "oh DUH why did I not think of it."

Two pairs of house-socks requested but not started yet. Three non-gift WIPS currently occupying me.

Gift knitting -- ouch. The plan was to start the special sweater in august. It happened near the end of September. Running . . . out . . . of . . . time. But this hat! So many problems solved! And that ball of yarn would really help. Ravelry ID is BadInfluence; email is linked to this comment so maybe that works too?
ReplyDeleteLove the hat with the ponytail hole! Just so cute with pompom too! I am so knitting this!
ReplyDeleteelei (Rav ID)
Just purchased this pattern for gifts and also the medio cowl to knit for my DIL. SHe loves squishy cowls.

ReplyDeleteWould love to try this hat for my daughter and maybe a matching wee version for the granddaughter.

My gift knitting is going well. I completed all my major gifts for this year, and I had enough extra projects made to make a donation to the Shawnee Mission Medical Center on behalf of my friend Heather who is going through breast cancer treatment. . .someone will end up with a Laden. Brioche Topper would be a great project to begin the re-stock of my war, er gift, chest. I'm kikukat on Ravelry.
ReplyDeleteGift knitting is going according to plan... Now if only I remember where I left the plan! The only MUST make is the socks for my nephew, he requested them, and who can say no to that? Bluegrove on Ravelry.
ReplyDeleteMy gift knitting is going very well. So far I've made a pony tail hat, socks, a Fetish and a lovely cowl that wraps around the wearer's shoulders. Baba's Mittens are up next and that Brioche Topper will likely follow. You can reach me via Ravelry (hilljs) when you're ready to let me know that I won that yummy looking yarn.
ReplyDeleteThis is the Year of the Hat for Christmas gifts and so far so good! I've played in my stash and have paired yarns with patterns and have two completed! I probably could knit 20+ hats for people, but I figure I'm done when the 25th of December arrives. Should I win this lovely skein of yarn, I'm knitting MYSELF a new hat, a Brioche Topper! RAV: llmcguire
ReplyDeleteI want it! Love the pattern. Perfect for first time brioche I think. I have 2 hats knit for gifts. It's an itty bitty start! Rav amchart
ReplyDeleteThis year I am knitting cowls. I am also finishing a vest for myself. I would knit this Brioche Topper if I win this yarn, I will knit one whether or not I win. Thank you for the chance. bubbysjody on ravelry
ReplyDeleteThis is the year of blankets and socks for me. I am about halfway done. I admit, this hat would totally be for me. Who am I kidding? I am gonna knit this hat win or not! Boberger on ravelry.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about a shawl.
ReplyDeleteI'm not doing any gift knitting. My family isn't knit worthy, except my sister and my niece, but they both knit, too. However, I'm casting on a pair of socks for my sister on Christmas Eve, she doesn't knit socks.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful hat! I am a big fan of your Christmas ornament kits also, Laura. Thanks for hour creative designs.lawrenced27
ReplyDeleteI'm only making a few gift knits since I am a sample knitter and have a lot of work ahead of me! Thanks for the video about Brioche! I am planning to try a project with that techniques in the new year and will need all the resources I can get. I love your hat design! I am mamagiff on Ravelry.
ReplyDeleteMe! I'd love it and the gift knitting is going well as I started very early! I am Melanie1 on Rav
ReplyDeleteI've got several of my knitted gifts done, and a couple more to go so I'm in pretty good shape this year. I'm nrehak on ravelry.
ReplyDeleteI was not planning on making any gifts this year. That may change, I saw a pattern that would be perfect for my husband.
ReplyDeleteMargostitches on Ravelry
I am behind on my holiday knitting and beading as usual. One item may end up being a February birthday gift, but it will all work out.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great hat and I haven't even though of gift giving but this would be great for that.
ReplyDeleteLove the pattern and yarn. So far knitting hats for all my xmas presents and definitely could add a Brioche Topper to the knitting list but for me!
ReplyDeleteBustin out Cruzado cowls for holiday gifting. nearly done - i love this pattern - quick knit with an amazing result
ReplyDeleteI’ve only gotten one hat into gift knitting, but this hat looks like a great fast gift! And I have Freia in my stash, along with a bunch of other worsted.
ReplyDeleteMy gift knitting had to be completed prior to Ithaca, so that I can now concentrate on wedding prep! This hat may just be what I've needed to convince me to try brioche, it's cute!

Not much holiday knitting this year, but great hat-and yarn-for trying out brioche knitting!
ReplyDeleteFigment49 on Ravelry
I am WAY behind in my gift knitting (Yikes!). My daughter has asked for a messy bun hat. This is perfect and so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI just found a pattern for an illusion scarf for my mani-pedi guy! He likes skulls, so I found a good pattern on Ravelry to try this method for the first time. Wish me luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this giveaway! I love this yarn!
I am OrangeSmoothie on Ravelry. Thanks again!
I actually managed to get an early start on my gift knitting this year, but as usual, I was overly ambitious in my planning, so we'll see if I manage to get it all done. This hat is super cute and I've been wanting to try more brioche lately...
ReplyDeleteKmmarsh14 on Ravelry
I’ve been trying to master brioche in the round! Love your idea! Pick me, please!

ReplyDeleteMy gift knitting is a gansey for my husband to celebrate our 20 years of marriage this December. I'm also kniting for Cornell Warm Welcome (a project started by my friend Stacie to provide warm clothes for the 58 Puerto Rican students who will be invited to Cornell this Spring.). I love this hat. I am going to buy the pattern right now! It will be a lovely hat for Cornell Warm Welcome. And maybe for me, too.
ReplyDelete--Cassiopaeia (a.k.a Diane T-H)
Love the Brioche Topper...looks like a good, relatively quick knit gift. My holiday knitting is not as far along as I’d like, but it will still do doable to finish before the holidays (without pulling all-nighters!).

I've been knitting Prolix mitts for gifts this year - would love to make this hat!
ReplyDeleteHoping to practice brioche and make a few messy bun hats for my nieces.
ReplyDeleteKnittykitties on ravelry
I'm finishing a cowl for a Christmas gift, hope to knit fingerless gloves and some sock for gifts. Never enough time
ReplyDeleteI am SO behind. I have plans to make hats for my kids and my niece & nephew (hat x4!) but I'm still finishing up a wrap (uh, for myself). I've finished one simple neck wrap for my MIL, and am about halfway finished with YOUR lovely hring scarf, which will go to my mother... Work, as ever, gets in the way of knitting!
ReplyDeletefreyja137 on ravelry.
as usual, taking the route of least resistance, and not stressing myself out with gift knitting....just doing my spinning homework☺
ReplyDeleteravid:susanjd
I am not really doing any holiday knitting this year. But next year, I plan to knit everything! Your brioche topper is so cute!
ReplyDeleteI love Freia. I was lucky enough to go to the factory in August. Giving is a check to my nephews and my great niece. Having knee surgery in 4 weeks.
ReplyDeleteauntaanne@comcast.net
So far I have completed a billowy scarf, a granite pattern hat, a winding cable hat WIP, and have yet to make a pair of cotton mitts and felted pot holders. I'm working mostly in order of distance, so the travelers get priority, just in case my arthritis kicks in again (the reason for late start) All made with love.
ReplyDeleteHibermuda on Ravelry
My gift knitting is going slowly... Been a little hard to get in the spirit lately - after Thanksgiving I should be able to make some time for myself and knitting for my family!
ReplyDeleteLove the hat pattern - I also keep my hair in a bun most of the time which makes for a really interesting profile in knitted hats when you stuff that inside. Lol (Tobias4lyph on Ravelry)
I have been making hats, shawls, cowls and ponchos for Xmas gifts, which I started back in August. I’m glad there is still a month to go before Xmas as I have a few more items to make or finish. A hat goes fast though and my sister in law would absolutely love this one. She wears them all winter since she lives in the Michigan U.P.
ReplyDeleteBeachglassgirl@live.com
I'm almost done with a scarf, bath mitt in the works, and a finished pair of socks. Still more to make!
ReplyDeleteAmylyork on ravelry
I have very little made this year so far. I have been busy trying to finish some projects - one of which is Creatrix that I had to put down until I became more confident. I am to the border now and somehow its become more important to finish than Christmas. I figured I could always send hats and scarves up north after Christmas - how's that for rationalization?!! I'm having that Brioche knit hat - its just perfect to send to my loved ones who still brave the cold. I am in sunny Florida!! Thanks for all your wonderful classes and patterns!
ReplyDeleteMy only gift project is a pair of cat-themed shorty socks for my son’s girlfriend. I hope there’s not a offspring’s partner curse! I just finished my first brioche project, a simple cowl in the round so I love the idea of brioche as a hat brim. Extra warm and squishy. CarolLynn on ravelry.
ReplyDeleteJust finished up Lola’s Choice - Athwart Mitts (so much fun to knit) but haven’t decided who is the lucky recipient. Working on Sweater for youngest daughter. Finished Hand Ruffles Mitts for oldest GD – working on 2nd pair for middle GD – still have one more pair for youngest GD. Also want to knit a hat for youngest daughters boyfriend … my time is slipping away!
ReplyDeleteCan’t wait to make your brioche topper “winter hat” since ponytail is my regular hair style.

Almost through with Creatrix (with beads) for a Christmas gift. It is beautiful, if I do say so myself. I would love to try the Brioche hat in the round. Interested in brioche ever since Knit Stars 2.0....really want to try that and I think there is just enough time for a gift for my only granddaughter.
ReplyDeleteLove the hat! I am soooo far behind with making gifts! KnitStars has me wanting to make way too many things. I am new to knitting and am having so much fun trying new techniques and special yarns.
ReplyDeleteWow, another great hat going into the gift queue. I have finished quite a few gifts already but New patterns always beckon. My rename is hehl
ReplyDeleteI've never tried Brioche knitting, it always looked to complicated. Your video makes it looks easy, so I guess I'm going to learn! The hat would be a perfect starter project. I need just a few more small gifts for Granddaughters. This would be perfect! blondie1hd@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteTrip to Webs for wool for gift mitts and cowl...Done! Casting on tonight, but I think my secret santa would love a brioche hat too!
ReplyDeleteNot a single thing started. Nada. Zilch. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteI just had hand surgery last week and I’m going through knitting withdrawals! This would be great to look forward to once I can get back to knitting.

I'm just pretty much getting started. Don't want to rush it, but Hanukkah does come earlier. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteMy most important knitting project this season is the combo of socks, gloves, cowl and hat for my baby sister who turns 70 on December 28th! I am half way through the cowl (a gorgeous Listado) and this darling hat would be a GREAT topper (tee-hee!) Candace13 on Ravelry
ReplyDeleteHi Laura, I’m working on a gift for myself - this is a first! Every time I finish something I’ve knit for
ReplyDeletemyself that I love, I realize there’s someone out there that is knit-worthy and I give it away. I’d do the same with this hat (although I could really use a hat with a pony-hole! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones!
I'm still behind on some baby gifts, so no holiday knitting for me this year! Thanks for the great giveaway, I'd love to win!
ReplyDeleteI'm saradenbo on Ravelry
I've knitted four shawls and a tea cosy so far. This hat is a lovely pattern and with a tutorial means I might just manage to master brioche this time!
ReplyDeleteDear Laura,
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favourite stitches and I adore the idea of this hat!
I was testing knit patterns and making ready-made hats for sale until recently but last week I finally made a small start in my gift knitting, three knitted
flower pins will be in the post to three very special Aunts on Wednesday! Then I will need to get serious about larger items. I have a cape to finish,
then I will need fast knits for Everyone else!
Happy knitting to all!

ReplyDeleteMost of my holiday knitting is done. I still need to knit a hat for my son, I’m working on a man bun hat for him. It’s similar to a messy bun hat but with the opening in the back above the ribbing Instead of on top. That yarn is gorgeous, 2018 is the year I will learn brioche!
ReplyDeleteI’m green-olive on ravelry
Thank you!
I keep adding to my Christmas knitting....so I expect to be finished, oh, around July. :)
ReplyDeleteI have a beautiful golden yellow lace shawl to complete, which is currently off the needles and waiting for me to rip it back a fix a mistake :( hearing of all your productivity is the incentive I need to get it back in progress

My projects are going well! I haven't tried brioche yet; this would be an awesome way to learn!
ReplyDeleteMy needles are ready, just need that skein of yarn. Love it.
ReplyDeleteDon’t even want to think about it. I decided to make my 5 granddaughters elf and Santa doll clothes. Aaagh. And then you go and throw this very intriguing hat into the mix. The mothers would all love one for their running I am sure. I MUST make 3 of these now. I hear bells ringing. Is Christmas getting closer. Or have I finally lost it ? Just joking. Love the Christmas push. And love that yarn.
ReplyDeleteI am working on a Cascadilla sweater for my daughter. I haven't decided between the medium and the large but have done one sleeve up to the medium length and started the second sleeve. I am going to take her measurements when she is here for Thanksgiving then decide. I am looking for a fingerless kit pattern for an eight year old, which shouldn't take too long.
ReplyDeleteLove the brioche topper. Would love the yarn.

ReplyDeleteHow's my gift knitting coming along? Well, let's see ... As far as the 7 scarves and one hat on my list, they are all done! Definitely, totally. My list also contains two knitted toys -- a bunny and a fox. (The bunny also has its own actual Fair Isle sweater, BTW.) Bunny is 95% complete, since its sweater is finished and its body is knit and stuffed; arms and legs require attachment, though, and face features must be embroidered. Fox is just 10% complete, with most of head knit only. This could take a while ... Thanks for the giveaway! I am gkgreen on Ravelry.

ReplyDeleteI've already bought one of the kits for the Brioche Topper on Interweave (plus another color of the yarn for it) a couple weeks ago but I'm buying the pattern on ravelry too now that it's there. I'd looked or it in your shop after I came across it on Interweave but could only find it there at the time so I ordered a kit. I recently decided to teach myself how to knit brioche and this hat might be just the right way to get started. I picked up 2 books at the library by Nancy Marchant, which I've been pouring over, and combined with your tutorials I like to think I'd be successful. Having recently retired I have so much more time to devote to knitting. knotmaryon on Ravelry
ReplyDeleteLove this hat. Must knit!
ReplyDeleteHoliday knitting is going well. Would be better if I did not start items over because of a size issue or had to purchase more yarn because the first is mia in a really nice yarn bag put somewhere safe where I will just know where it is. Looking forward to viewing your vidieo regarding brioche in the round because the cowl I did was started five times and has to be done again. Thanks sevenunderpar on ravelry
ReplyDeleteNo holiday knitting this year so I'm knitting for myself for pleasure. This hat is so darn cute and I would love to win the Freia yarn!
ReplyDeleteThis would make a great Christmas gift, would still have time to make it right!?!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful yarn to use in you lovely broucher pattern. Perfect. Would love to knit for myself and a friend for the holidays
ReplyDeleteBoy I hate auto correct...broucher = BRIOCHE!!! ;-)
DeleteI’m one of those strange people who knits holiday gifts all year long so all I have to do is finish one pair of socks. However, if I win, I will knit the hat as a gift to myself!
ReplyDeleteI am getting there with my holiday knitting, but still have a ways to go. Hopefully I can make some more good progress over the next week or two so I don't end up stressing about deadlines! Hirsheybolt on Ravelry
ReplyDeleteArgh, gift knitting ends up being too stressful! Maybe my husband will get a hat, but only if I slip it in between the socks and sweater I'm working on.
ReplyDeleteI decided early that I was not going to knit any gifts this year, but as we are getting closer to Christmas I just can't do it. My husband is visiting his kids and grandkids in early December and, after seeing this pattern, I decided to knit one for each his daughters, starting tonight!

I have a rather large scarf and two hats to knit. I'm not sure I will finish as I am a slow knitter and this is a busy time at work. I really like your new pattern for the hat and the yarn is beautiful! My Ravelry name is PAC300.

ReplyDeleteA couple of accidents have left me knitting a little slow but I am undaunted! I am knitting Transitus for my 20yo daughter in Springvale worsted and it is silly cute. I will add this hat to the list for myself. I love Freia gradients.
ReplyDeleteCheers!

I am rather broke as I am building a pig pen for some porkers arriving in spring so no presents made as yet. Would live to use the yarn to make my best friend your hat!
ReplyDeleteSocks mostly done, gradient wrap needs blocking, and starting some ornaments. Great hat--pattern in my library!
ReplyDeleteHanging my head in shame: I haven't even started!
ReplyDeleteGift knitting was going great UNTIL my grand daughter told me she wanted an over-sized knitted pullover sweater for Christmas. Maybe her birthday? Anyway would love to win!
ReplyDeleteLovely Hat for a gift ideal.
