Duplex Cowl: A Scarf Style 2 book and yarn Giveaway!
Remember last week when I said this book showed up at my door? Well it was an extra good mail day as I got TWO copies instead of one! So, it's time to tell you about my design, Duplex, in Ann Budd's new collection Scarf Style 2 AND hold a giveaway so you can knit your own!
Duplex is a cowl that can be worn around the neck or the shoulders. It is a "fauxbius" constructed of alternating garter stitch and stockinette short row row triangles separated by eyelets. A fauxbius is merely a rectangle, begun with a provisional cast on, and then worked to the desired length. Before grafting you flip your rectangle thus creating a moebius!
I did get some great shots on Caitlin when we went on a road trip to Webs right before I shipped Duplex off to Interweave... I do love me an rusty old iron bridge!
I used Dream in Color Smooshy for Duplex in grey tabby... I was sent two skeins, and only ended up using one as I made the small. Any fingering weight sock yarn will do... I think it would be really nice in something with a little cashmere too : )!
Who wants to win my extra skein of yarn and extra copy of Scarf Style 2?
Just leave a comment by the end of the day on August 25th.... do you have any ideas of a yarn you have in stash that might be good for this design?
I can't wait to start seeing more Duplex's being knit! Don't forget to leave a way for me to get in touch with you!

That's really lovely, and the bridge is a great backdrop! I'd love to win this prize. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful pattern, Laura. I'm having a hard time coming up with a sock yarn in my stash that would NOT look lovely in this pattern! Okay, maybe my pink and white self-striping might not work; but maybe it WOULD for spring and summer! Great job. Love the photos. Rav amchart
ReplyDeleteAnother lovely design Laura. As much as I love Dream in Color Smooshy, I also have a skein of 100% alpaca that would make a lovely cowl.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty pattern. I, too, have a few sock yarns that would look lovely in this pattern.
ReplyDeleteI NEED THIS!!! I have SO MANY sock/fingering yarns that will work for this
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I have a yarn in my stash for this cowl, but I'd love to witn the book anyway!!
ReplyDeleteWhy yes, I'd love to win both the book and the fiber! The cowl is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love the simplicity of your cowl and think that it'd look great in indigodragonfly's Merino Silk in Sargasm.
ReplyDeleteAnother fabulously wearable design - I look forward to making this. I have some semi-solid sock yarn in stash that would be good for this, including some Smooshy with Cashmere. Great staging backdrop, too!
ReplyDeleteI've got a skein of smooshy called Chinatown Apple that I think would be peeerrrrfect.
ReplyDeleteI love Ann Budd's books and this new one looks as if it will be no exception. I have many beautiful sock weight yarns to choose from but would love to win your extra skein of Dream In Colour Smooshy in grey tabby - your Duplex looks lovely in this colour. I go by "Oneday Designs" on Ravelry
ReplyDeleteLove Scarf Style one, so I'm sure #2 is just as good if not better (especially with your great pattern in it!)

Yummmmm! This is so lovely! I'd adore making it in any one of a variety of colors — and what a great gift it would make for the holidays. :)
ReplyDeleteLove the color of the yarn. I don't have anything in my stash that would look as good in your pattern.
ReplyDeleteOoo! Love the color and the shape!!
ReplyDeleteAs it happens, "Scarf Style" is on my knitting bookshelf at home! I have a fair amount of yarn that might work for the cowl, but I love love love that grey!!
ReplyDeleteOh! Oh! Pick me! Pick me! I love yummy hand candy and your awesome deigns. It's the perfect combo. Cheers! PinkySuede on Ravelry
ReplyDeleteI really like the simplicity and the structure of this cowl. It would be great for fall coming soon. DIC Smooshy is one of my favorite yarn (I love the colors, the bounciness and sheen of it), but that's true: a cashmere yarn would also be a great option for this cowl. I have a skein of Optics Fibers Kashmir in a nice semi-solid brown in my stash that would work great for it!
ReplyDeleteCecileinIndiana on Rav
I have some alpaca that was gifted to me that would be fabulous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cowl! Love the color! I don't have anything in my stash that would work. I've only been knitting for about a year, and my stash is woefully small :)
ReplyDelete- Steffie (szuroff [at] gmail [dot] com)
I have some beautiful yarn from an indie dyer in England - Ena & Peggy - that would be perfect for this.

Beautiful pattern!
ReplyDeleteI have a skein of madeleinetosh in a vivid teal colour that would be fabulous for this project!
ReplyDeleteOf course I don't have any yarn in my stash, why would you think I would?
ReplyDeleteAhem.
Actually, I am hoping to find appropriate yarn at my local Knitter's Fair in September.
I have some great Madelinetosh yarn in a deep rusty red in my stash that would be great for this project! What a great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI have a GORGEOUS skein of blue and green (I think it's called Irish Queen) merino/cashmere/silk from an indie dyer - Vice - that I bought this summer on vacation. It's beautiful and I think this would be a fabulous pattern for it!
ReplyDeleteWhat A GREAT pattern! Love the tones in the yarn. Would love to make this cowl for my 14 yr old!

ReplyDeleteI don't think I have anything in stash that would be the BOMB for this .. Its a fantastic excuse to go shopping!

ReplyDeleteThat looks fun to wear. I have a really small stash with most of it laceweight, but there might be some alpaca there that could work for this!
ReplyDeleteI love this little project. I have looked at it several times. I have lots of possibilities in my stach to make this little gem, several with cashmere and a couple alpaca, too.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great design. It looks great on you!
ReplyDeleteI would love this book-I love the 1st one too. I have lots of handspun yarn that would look great in your pattern.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great design! I think the Plucky Knitter's Primo Fingering would work incredibly well with this pattern. This book looks fantastic. I love the first one. Thanks for doing this giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI have a cartoonishly huge amount of fingering weight yarns, though I think I'd choose to make this in Tanis Fiber Arts Blue Label in the Pink Granite colorway (it's a soft pinkish/purplish grey color, and is sadly a OOAK colorway).
ReplyDeleteI'm loving a lot of patterns in this book, though it's quite possible my biggest reason for wanting it is that there's actually a pattern with my fairly-uncommon name in it.
I have a skein of Dream in Color Starry in my stash for this cowl.
ReplyDeleteI think I have some Dream in Color that would work! The pattern is excellent and looks great for fall!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! I have some Tosh DK that might want to become a Duplex. ~ knittingwithwords on Ravelry
ReplyDeleteI'd use one of my Poems yarns that has a very long color change.

I hate to confess how many skeins of sock yarn I have in my stash that might work for this (bet I'm not alone in that). Your cashmere comment made me think of a skein of Cephalopod Bugga in VW Bug, a lovely shade of green.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely pattern and yarn! I have tons of sock/fingering weight to make this for gifts at Christmastime. And I love Ann Budd too!
ReplyDeleteBriggie @ Ravelry

I have been wanting to try knitting with smooshy yarn. Good excuse to try!! Love the pattern and would love to win!! HA!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool pattern! I'd love to win the giveaway. I have a few skeins of Fleece Artist merino 2/6 that would look great in this pattern, and also a skein of Knit Picks stroll that could work.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!! I would love to try it with Everlast Sock, too :)
ReplyDeleteI have loads of yarn in my stash for this - red Alisha Goes Around Bison Tracks, some DIC Smooshy in Purple Rain, Numma Numma Doppio, oh the options are many. I loved the first Scarf Style book so much - how exciting to be part of #2. I can't wait to get my hands on one (through this contest or not!)
ReplyDeleteI have some Schaeffer Yarns Anne that would make up beautifully into this cowl/scarf. I've been holding onto it for something special and this would be perfect.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway love reading the comments

I am always cold, even in the summer and wear cowls, shawls and wraps all the time. I would knit this out of Tosh Merino Light for the winter and perhaps some Claudia Handpainted lined for the summer. Oh, and I have some Ella Rae Lace Merino, that would make a lovely drapey cowl.....or some Misti Alpaca Handpainted fingering weight. I could go on and on, but will stop there.....

I don't like vowels as a rule, but I love this one! I think of the yarn in my stack, one of my MadTosh skeins would be lovely - either the pashmina for a softer effect or the TML for a drapier effect.
ReplyDelete*cowls. (I actually like vowels... find them useful, even!)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a lovely way to get Christmas out of the way. Have some lovely Skien yarn that would look great and is so soft on the skin. Also have a bunch of Smooshy with Cashmere in my stash.
ReplyDeleteI've got some great DIC smooshy with cashmere as well as a few beautiful skeins of tosh sock and MANY skeins of hazel knits piquant lite and dk lively that would work beautifully. Can't wait to get a copy of this book.

ReplyDeleteI have some teal wool that would be perfect for this.

Thanks for the chance to win something, first of all. Second, this is beautiful and I love the challenge of knitting something like this as it would be new to me. And third, I honestly don't have any sock yarn in my stash worthy of this project, but I am on a spinning kick right now and have a few rovings that would look great for this project, colorwise!! And assuming I spin enough yardage at the correct weight! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh and my email is pibblesnknits@gmail.com
DeleteLove the design and have never knitted a fauxbius (or a moebius even!). I am currently spinning some fibre that I hope will be my first ever fingering weight and it would be perfect for this. The grey Smooshy would make a perfect gift, once knitted, for a g/f who would be able to wear the colour much better than I would.
ReplyDeleteKiltsnquilts on Ravelry.
Lovely design! I haven't gotten around to trying Smooshy yet and that gray is beautiful! I've also got loads of Plucky Knitter Primo Fingering yarn that would look great in a design like this.

I have a skein of Tempted Hand Painted Glam Girl, a sparkly skein of sock yarn that would be perfect for this project. It has varying shades of blue with hints of purple. I would love both the skein and/or the book.
