Magmatic + Rifton= The Perfect Match
Oh you guys... this week's giveaway is GOOD!
Ever since Jill released Rifton last January I KNEW I had to make another version of Magmatic Scarf in it. I got a skein from her right away, but since she sold out so quickly I decided to wait until she had more to release the pattern to the public. I know this frustrated some of you who have been waiting for it for over a year... sorry?
So, I want to tell you about Magmatic and then I want to tell you about Rifton and then I want to have a GIVEAWAY (cause its' Friday, yo!)
Magmatic Scarf was originally the last mystery knit-along of 2014's M Club.... it was made with 3 mini skeins and 1 set of Space Cadet Mini's. Members got "parts" of the design, including beads, throughout the year's shipments and then they put them all together into a magic ball and started knitting. (You can read about more about it here.)
Magmatic is worked in an elongated chevron stitch in the round, and then steeked to turn it into a scarf. Fringe is then "self-made" by unraveling stitches at each end of the scarf. Knitting Magmatic is a blast... cutting it is awesome, and fringing it is just plain fun! Of course, the pattern includes videos for these last steps, don't worry! I love the original version that I made with beads, but check it out in Rifton..... (yes, that is my girl, I can't even...!)
Rifton is pretty special... it is a single ply, fine USA grown & spun wool yarn. Each colorway shades between 2 natural undyed wool colors and dyed in the wool (by Jill) brights, making it a unique striping ombre yarn.
Rifton is made in super small batches... Jill will have this "round" for sale at her Studio Open House this Saturday at Rhinebeck AND AT THE SAME TIME be posting it for sale in her Etsy shop. (A little bird told me it would be up around 4pm.)
Time for a giveaway...
Who wants to win a skein of Rifton in Spring to knit Magmatic Scarf (or Magmatic Boom?)
Just leave a comment below by 12pm (EST) on Oct 20th letting me know what you up to this weekend while I am at Rhinebeck! I will randomly choose a winner and announce them in next week's Friday giveaway post!
Last week's winner...
Congrats to JoanieBaloney.... Get in touch so I can send you your Colinette Jitterbug to knit Biplex!!!!!!!
Oh, and it is my duty to inform you that sign ups for 2016's M Club close on October 20th...

Green! Definitely my colourway. No Rhinebeck on the West Coast so I am having a mini getaway with friends. They are all knitters so we foresee a couple evenings of knitting, catching up and whatever mischief we can create. I'll read the Rhinebeck reports but my own getaway is going to be a ton of fun. I already know where to go for cupcakes.
ReplyDeleteI will probably spend the weekend knitting and drinking beer (and doing the usual obligatory household chores)
ReplyDeleteSaturday will likely be chores and some time in the fresh air and light, Sunday we will go to a fair in Zurich where hubby will enjoy looking at all the loudspeakers and other audio stuff and I will sit in the lounge, enjoy tea and knit.
ReplyDeleteSaturday is for housework, I'm afraid. And Sunday I'll bring my two years old girl to her first birthday party: one of her daycare friends. I feel it will be the first of many... :o)
ReplyDeleteAnd your girl is stunning! How pretty and lovely!
I am going to a rug hooking get together.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I will be going to Rhinebeck on Sunday. My first time ever at Rhinebeck. I'm so excited that I could seriously cry. I wish I could spend the weekend there, but we have my son's 8th birthday to celebrate first :).
ReplyDeleteI wish I were going to Rhinebeck! But I will be visiting my son at college and going to the biggest college football game of the weekend, so it's not all bad! The yarn is gorgeous and the pattern looks fun!

I am going to rhinebeck and I will be at Jill's open studio. I will buy some yarn, too. I love the pattern using Rifton and I would love to win a skein and/or pattern... I might just buy the pattern and the rifton anyway!

I will be spending the weekend basking in the beautiful Florida sunshine while knitting some Christmas gifts. Would LOVE to win this skein of Rifton...my favorite colors!!

ReplyDeleteI will be finishing my Gusto. I started it earlier in the week with some Freia Ombre Fingering that I purchased at a new to me (and huge to me) yarn shop in Bethlehem, Knitter's Edge. I saw lots of Laura's kits there! What an awesome shop!
ReplyDeleteThis weekend I will be lamenting living so far from Rhinebeck. To distract me from the jealousy, the husband and I are going to a movie and a Crossfit Competition to watch our Sister-in-law compete and see our niece! OSUknitgal on Ravelry!
ReplyDeleteThis weekend I will be enjoying a house to my self as the boys are going on a cub scout camping trip :) So it will be spent with lots of yarn and Netflix! I love this yarn and the pattern looks amazing!

ReplyDeleteHi, I'll be cleaning out my mom's apartment this weekend, and hopefully knitting a second Circo, if my yarn arrives! Rhinebeck sounds like tons more fun. Well, except for knitting the Circo part... But, I could do that at Rhinebeck, too, right? Sigh. Too bad there is so much to do here. Have fun!

Perfect yarn for Magmatic. Gave mine as a gift last year so I need one for me:)

Oh I LOVE Rifton!!!! I have already made one of your patterns using it. It is my DH favorite shawl at this moment that I wear. "Spring" is the color that I want and I will not be attending Rhinebeck but what a way to have a part of the fun
ReplyDeleteGorgeous scarf and would help me learn to steek- never tried it! I'll be camping this weekend in the NC mountains with my family- no yarn, but nature all around. Cheers!

ReplyDeletethis weekend I will block both circo mystery cowls I made :)
ReplyDeleteRhinebeck sounds so fun, but a little too far away from Denmark. But you enjoy. I'm crazy about that colour combo, saw it on Instagram, too.
ReplyDeleteThis weekend: Have to make a ring and a bracelet for a customer. In the evening do some knitting, have nearly finished Circo. and maybe...see my grandchildren .
GreteJ on Rav.
Believe it or not, I am finally finishing my Circo tonight. THEN, and only once I've bound it off, I am opening a bottle of wine (or two) and spending a weekend with my hubby just doing NOTHING. (okay, that excludes laundry and other miscellaneous household jobs). If I am still clear headed I'll block my Circo. Actually, to me, this will be a great weekend 'cause leaves are turning, weather is holding and the wine rack and tequila decanter are full. Life is great!!!

ReplyDeleteLaura, thanks so much for this new version of Magmatic. I loved knitting the original and wore it almost every day last winter. I have to say I was scared to do the steeking but your video inspired me and it was quite easy in the end. Just love you patterns - am a bit obsessed with beads now!
ReplyDeleteI will not be at Rhinebeck as I have moved from NJ and now live in sunny Trinidad - yes the Caribbean! I will be finishing my Migra mitts and then starting another project. I have my stash to comfort me when I get nostalgic.
First of all, your daughter is beautiful and makes a perfect model for your scarf.
ReplyDeleteOff to the fall festival with my three granddaughters on Saturday in Northport AL. On Sunday I plan to block Circo - and try to decide if I should part with it --- my daughter had her eye on it before I even finished and her birthday is in November...hummmmm...
Have a wonderful time at Rhinebeck - looking forward to your stories.
Helping with a breast cancer walk, celebrating a friend on her 50th birthday and then on Sunday going to Yarnosphere in Long Beach. Should keep me busy and out of trouble, except for the yarn part.
ReplyDeletePretty wool and neat scarf which sounds like a fun make! HettiesMum on Rav.
ReplyDeleteSiberspinner on Ravelry here: This weekend is a mushroom hunt in a local state park where I hope to find more dye mushrooms, a classical guitar concert in the evening and Sunday we give a mushroom walk at a local county park. ReplyDeleteWould LOVE to have that skein of Rifton Spring!
I will be enjoying the rain in the NV desert, while finishing wip's (knitting & quilting). It's a good weekend to stay inside by a fire. Rav ID: arcticanni

This weekend I'm with my husband at his 50th high school reunion. There's lots of knitting at my side.
ReplyDeleteOh my Rhinebeck...envy. There is none of that in the middle of the pacific. I will probably be sitting at my loom - Christimas is coming.
ReplyDeleteThis Saturday I host a bi-monthly knit group in my studio. It starts at 1000 and, supposedly, runs to 1300 (at which point my husband shows up and takes any lunch orders!), but invariably I have a few who stay later, as late as 1800. It's fine by me, because I would be here knitting anyway, so it turns into a mini getaway.
ReplyDeleteThis weekend I shall be working on a WIP sweater (no deadline pressure!) and turning the colors of that Spring Rifton as I read posts from people going to Rhinebeck. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteI am painting my basement ceiling on Saturday and hosting a game day on Sunday, with lots of knitting in between. Karebear66 on Ravelry.
ReplyDeleteI am going to be wishing I were at Rhinebeck! Will get there one of these days. In the meantime I will be working on a linen stitch scarf.

I'll have one short bout of weeping that I'm not at Rhinebeck and then will head to our local farmer's market for some apples and pumpkins, knit a tiny fox (courtesy of Anna Hrachovec), and bake a Reine de Saba cake for my birthday on Monday!
ReplyDeleteOn Saturday I will not be far from the computer trying to get a skein of Rifton. Otherwise, I will be getting some reading and knitting done this weekend.
ReplyDeleteLove those colors! I have literally no plans this weekend, other than to make brownies at some point - so I'm pretty excited about that!

Beautiful yarn! I will be starting the lace edging for a Waveland Scarf (by Jen Lucas). This is for a class at my LYS. Also, hopefully finishing an infinity scarf for a friend.
ReplyDeleteI really like Magmatic Boom! And the yarn & colors are beautiful. I'll be spending most of my weekend helping my brother-in-law with "widower" business - my sister passed away on the 4th. Bro-in-law is quite physically limited (on oxygen full time and an amputee, rt leg) so I'm helping him get things done and some sorting etc. He makes decisions and I do most of the physical lifting etc. After spending time with that, I go home and knit to relax. So glad I have an outlet for emotion & stress. Very therapeutic! I'd like to win the contest so I can knit the Magmatic Boom for my other sister. She isn't in great health either, and I want to make her something nice for this winter. Anyway - Love your work and appreciate your talent. Have an awesome weekend!
ReplyDeleteI'll be watching the baseball playoffs and knitting.

I had hoped to go to Rhinebeck this year. Hubs agreed last year to go, and the only stipulation is that the Detroit Lions could not have a home game that weekend. I had to wait months to find out the football schedule, and wouldn't you know it, there are (3) home games in a row in Detroit, one being the Rhinebeck weekend :( However, I will be knitting tomorrow and get to babysit my granddaughter in the evening. Maybe next year, the Lion's will be away during Rhinebeck weekend and he will agree to drive with me to New York. Fingers crossed!!
ReplyDeleteIt's Saturday in Beijing already and definitely an "inside day" (bad weather) so a good excuse to stay cocooned in the sewing/knitting room all day. Sunday looks like it will be better so no doubt there'll be some outside pursuits. Would love to go to Rhinebeck one of these days. I have loved rifton ever since it came out - thanks for the rifton-sized magmatic! Cheers Mara (rav name marakw)

ReplyDeleteWe're taking the kids to Family Time at the library on Saturday morning; in the afternoon, we're going to the lake (where it's entirely too cold IMO) for an annual lunch/dinner with some of my husband's cousins from downstate. Sunday, we'll probably veg out at home.

Love the Spring colorway. Yesterday morning I volunteered for an elementary school fundraiser, spending six hours in the hot, bright day. Last night I ran a Pathfinder game. Today I'm chilling, knitting on my three projects. Good but busy weekend.
ReplyDeleteYesterday (for I Love Yarn Day) I went to the Espanola Pumpkin & Fiber Fest (not exactly Rhinebeck but it's the closest event I can actually attend) and had a great time. There was a fantastic exhibit of coral reef made entirely of knitted/crocheted/sewn items which I hear will be travelling to Ripley's Aquarium in Toronto. So very cool! I also won a door prize of organic oatmeal and missed the opportunity to make a fiber pun about it on the phone.
ReplyDeleteThe weekend is mostly over - I did some yard work, hit Ikea with some friends, and got in a bit of knitting. Probably the last nice weekend of the year for those of us in the north!
