Review and Giveaway: Chiaogoo Red Lace NEW Interchangeables!

I'm more excited than usual to share this post with you... in fact last night I was supposed to be writing this review and all I could do was knit with my new needles (on another exciting project for Adorn Anew)... Whoops!
chiagoo_magic
Magic Looping with my new needles!
If you have taken classes with me you've heard me go on and on about the importance of using the right needle for the project.  When working lace, having a sharp tipped needle is KEY!  Last fall I was at a festival and didn't have the needle I needed. So I purchased a Chiaogoo Red Lace Needle to try.  At half the price of Addi Lace needles I was hopeful it would do the trick.  OH.MY.GOODNESS I feel in love.... within the week I placed a huge order for more in the sizes I use the most and my other needles began to collect dust.

While attending TNNA in June I heard that Chiaogoo was releasing a set of Interchangeables with their lace tip so I asked for a set to review, the worse that could happen is that they would say no, right?  I wouldn't want to talk up a product I hadn't tried!  Luckily Chiaogoo said yes and my full set got here last week.

LOVE is not a strong enough word!  LOVE I tell you!
I do think I will marry these needles... is that bad?

Let me tell you why:
chiagoo_set
The Tips: The tips are sharp and slim, but not so sharp that they "hurt" your finger tip when moving your stitches along the needle.  Needle size is laser imprinted on the tips so you can easily keep track of sizes.
The Finish: Chiaogoo uses stainless steel that they lightly brush so there is just a bit of grab.  This is key, as if they were too smooth they would be super slippery and your lace stitches would go all over the place.  If they were too brushed, on the other hand, your stitches would stick to the needles and not slide fast enough.  Chiaogoo found the perfect balance for their finishing!
chiagoo_join
The Join: For me this is most important element of an interchangeable needle.  If the join is not smooth then your stitches get caught as they are sliding from cord to tip and your knitting is slowed down every time you have to massage them along.  What I will tell you is that the join is so smooth I forgot I was knitting with interchangeables!  There is a key included for tightening down the join after you screw it together, don't skip this step as the tip and cord can start to loosen which you do not want!  The hole that is in the cord end for tightening also serves as a lifeline holder!  Have you ever placed a life line with an interchangeable needle?  I'm adding it to my list for video tutorials to be made!
The Cord: Chiaogoo uses a flexible cord that is made of a multi-strand, steel cable that is nylon coated.  My stitches slide gracefully over it!  (yes, I am feeling poetic about my needles....)
The Packaging: The needles come packed in a small graphically printed case that seems to be perfectly design for them!  I've had it open and closed and knocking around in the knitting basket and no tips have come sliding out on their own!  This is KEY!  There is nothing more annoying than having to replace all of your tips into their proper place every time you open a case!  All of the needle pockets are marked with the needle size so it's easy to replace the tip you are done using and find the one you need!  There is a zipper pocket on the outside for the stitch markers, key, and cord ends.
The Set: The sets are available in two sizes Small (US2 -US8 [2.75mm- 5mm]), and Large (US9 -US15 [5.5mm- 10mm].  Each set has a different set of cables as the connector on the end has to fit the needle tip.  Each set comes with a 14", 22" and 30" cable, there is a connector to join the cables to make a 60" long cord.  I didn't receive one of those connectors so I can't tell you about it, but if it's designed anything like the rest of this kit I know it will be excellent!

For YOU:  Chiaogoo has generously offered to a SMALL set for a GIVEAWAY!  So, do you want to win these awesome needles?  Just leave a comment letting me know why you want them (bonus points if you make me laugh) by Wednesday September 26th at midnight EST.  Leave a way to get in touch with you.  I'll let you know who the winner is the next day!

(If you can't want to wait to see if you win, I know that Grandma's Knit & Crochet has lots of these sets in stock, and even has a coupon code for the month of September (SEPT2012) that will give you 9% off your order!)

    1. I would love to win these. I have no interchangeables-still knitting basically on straight needles. The idea of having the size on them is incredible! That's a big reason I have so few circular needles and I didn't know sharper tips make lace knitting easier. Thanks for the info and the opportunity to win a set of these needles!

    3. HELLLP! I NEED these needles! I have a set of interchangeables that will remain nameless (but the initials are KP)and I am tired, tired of calling for replacements of bent/poorly glued tips, nickel plate flaking off, and having to use my lifelines because the cable has come off the tip. And the "sharps" just aren't. It's almost enough to make me give up lace. Save me! Plus, I really want those sexy red cables. I'm jgoodnow on Rav.

    4. I really need these needles! Every time I need size 3 needles I can only locate my size 8's! When I need 8's I can only find 5's! What a predicament. Life is too short to be hunting for needles. I should be KNITTING! Please include me in the giveaway. Thanks a bunch. I'm crafty.me@sbcglobal.net

    5. Coincidently, I bought my first pair of these needles just last week! What really attracted me were the red cables! In fact, I needed #2 circular needle anyway, but really, I bought them because they're RED. I really want the small set, and would love to win them.

  4. These look awesome. I like the fact that the sizes are etched on the needle and that the join looks smooth. All great features, in my opinion. It sounds like the price point will be good, too!

  6. I use Knit Picks and I'm happy with them. But I wish they would find a way to indicate the size ON the needle. I guess I'm doomed to continue sliding them in my needle gauge. What are the brown and white rectangular things above the case? Are they stoppers for the end of the cable or what?

  8. I used a pair of Chiaogoo for a project this summer. I loved working with them. I have yet to buy a set of circular needles. Besides I really like red. It makes more sense than buying new needles for each project and not realizing what I really have--3 size 6; 2size 4; some 16 inch; still others 32. Now it is time to organize my needles as well as shoes!

  13. I love Chiaogoo REds. I was so excited that they were making an interchangable set. It will be forever to they get them here locally. Wonder if the red cord can ward the evil eye off of knitting? Will it imbue all my stitches with magic? These are some of the things I could discover if I win.

Also I wont have to choose between buying the six kids milk and buying mommie needles. So it would be a mitzvah on your part if I won. really. :)

Thanks for the chance to get my hands on some - enjoy yours. C

  17. Gah! Why didn't I wait to buy interchangeables? I bought a set of well known, value priced interchangeables about 5 weeks ago, and I HATE them. The joins are nice, but the tips themselves are in two parts, and where the metal joins the wood on the tips, many sizes are askew, which makes knitting with them less than fun. The manufacturer has offered to replace the tips each time I encounter a problem, but this is going to take forever! I'm in the process of divorcing this set. Do you think it's too early to get into a serious relationship with a lovely set of Chiaogoo Red Lace Interchangeables? (Please say no, because I'd love to win them!) If those sexy needles want to move in, they can reach me on Ravelry--I'm Calembour.

I can't possible fulfill this life (death?) dream without this set.

  21. Wow, they make an interchangeable kit?! It sounds perfect. I have one fixed circular of theirs and I also LOVE it. The cable intrigued me, and it doesn't disappoint. The needle tips are nice and pointy but not too pointy, as you said. A small kit would be ideal for me as I don't usually knit with anything heavier than worsted. Thanks for contacting Chiaogoo and making this giveaway happen! Enjoy your new needles. Can't wait to see what you create with them. :)

  22. I would love a chance to try these. If I were a millionaire I would only knit with pointy "lace" type stainless steel needles. Alas, I am not and therefore only get new ones of this style when I have nothing else available in my needle stash. I'm especially excited to hear that their interchangeable set goes down to a size 2! Most of them seem to stop at 4 and then have a bunch of larger needle sizes I never use.

  23. Are you kidding? Who doesn't need more needles?

I was in love with the first pair of these I bought. I've never purchased an interchangeable set but these needles are so great I would love to give them a chance. I got one circular Signature needle for Mother's Day last year but I think the Chiaogoo needles come very close to the same quality at a much cheaper price.

I have a fixed pair and love them so interchangables are going to be great! The sad thing will be that I will have to hide them. 36. Oh I went absolutely BONKERS when I saw that ChiaoGoo was coming out with an Interchangeable set!! I LOVE Interchangeables and I LOVE ChiaoGoo! I use Circs all the time, and I splurged and got Addi Turbos when I first began knitting, but started acquiring some of the ChiaoGoo fixed circulars as needed for magic-looping (so only in 47"). I LOVE them for magic-looping! They are Oh-My-Gosh-To-Die-For!!! But I really didn't like having to get fixed circs in all different sizes... When they announced that interchangeables were coming I knew it would be my perfect set! Unfortunately, they aren't in my budget yet, but I'm dreaming... I would LOVE to win a set... LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. Plus, red is my favorite color, so I get to look at my favorite color while I'm knitting too! I'm telling you, they're made for me!! I'm NMStacey on Ravelry.

The only needles I ever used are Knitpicks and I'm happy with it. But at the same time I'm writing this message, I'm listening to a knitting podcast where they talked about the importance of great needles for a better looking knitting and how they think it's more pleasurable to knit with them. So now, I'm intrigued and would like to try some fancy needles. Winning this kit instead of buying it would allow me to buy more yarn with the money not-spent in needles and would allow my husband to really think I'm crazy to buy more yarn (for some strange reason, he doesn't understand why do I really need more yarn and my answer "because all serious knitters do" doesn't convince him...)
Bonus: Red is my favorite color :)

  73. Oh man, these needles might be the answer to all of my knitting nightmares! I love interchangeable needles in general, but I am not very good at putting them away when I am done with them--particularly if I have pulled out a bunch of different sets to swatch with. So, when I get into a cleaning up mood--or when I am desperately trying to find a needle to swatch another new project, I rumble around my house pulling needles partway out of one of the 1,000 UFOs I have sitting around, trying to reach behind chairs with my needle sizer (I have four of these stashed all over the place--I even keep one on a magnet on my refrigerator so that I can find it when I need it) to see if this is the size that I am looking for.

To hear that the Chiagoo needles have the size printed right on them--heaven!!!! Please, please, please pick me!!!

  79. Why do I need these needles more than anyone else who has replied? Because I've been living in an RV for 6 weeks with my husband and two teenage sons and am really feeling the need to have a weapon that can be easily concealed handy! They may also come in handy in picking the locks on our home if we don't manage to get to close today! (Delays galore - but that's another story! )

  84. When I saw this post I had to take a second look...I have been looking into this set since I realized it existed! I own one Sz #3 US fixed circular (because - being the clutz I am - I dropped my Sz #3 Addi Lace fixed circ out of my bag & down the gutter while sitting on the side of a street watching a parade). I was on vacation & dropped into a small LYS & decided to purchase the ChiaoGoos Red Lace because of my eternal fear of airline confiscation(Let's face it they are more resonably priced than the Addis).
Sorry for the long post, but I TOTALLY COVETING these needles!!!

  92. I realize that it might not be enough information to get in touch with me just based on my Google profile on blogspot. So here's my ravelry ID: rloveking.

BTW, my husband looked at my ChaioGoo circulars last night and said they were perfect ninja weapons! The plastic coated braided wire between them looks like a perfect garotte! And the points, perfect for stabbing. He asked how a ninja could hide them in plain sight. My answer? Stuck into a ball of yarn. :)

  93. Those needles are amazing. I have wanted a (new) set of interchangeable needles for awhile. I did get a set from my mother. But they were her mother's, passed onto her, and she hasn't used them in years because she doesn't knit. She crochets mostly. So they are old, stiff, and don't stay together very well. Plus it is missing some sizes too. So winning a better set would be great!

  95. Hi Laura...OMGosh I would love to win these...I have tried and own almost every other interchangable/ circular needle on the planet ..and so far the only other interchangable circulars I love are signature...however as you know they are a bit pricy...
I would love to win these needles as I am tired of "OTHER" interchangable circulars end up wound around my neck feet and arms as they are so stiff...ARGH..not a pretty site to see a senior lady tied up...(get your minds out of gutter now) LOL..honestly, my arthritic hands suffer from such stiff needle cables...and OH the cussing when stitches fall off slick needles...*hold your ears*..cussing like....OH Horse Feathers, Geez-0-Flip..too hideous to repeat lol.

Hugs and Good Luck all that enter,

  96. I really wasn't excited about interchangables until now. I LOVE ChiaoGoo Red Lace. They rival Signatures at a fraction of the price. In fact, I was going to purchase more Signatures, but now I'm investing in a set of ChiaGoo interchangables.

  97. Unlike coat hangers, knitting needles do not multiply when ones' back is turned or the lights are off. That said, the Chiaogoo Red Lace Interchangeable Needles are so cleverly designed that it would not be surprising to find that they will multiply when one goes AWOL. Of course, to test my theory, I would need a set to place in a closet or knitting bag. If I am in fact correct, duplications will be shared with all who ask (closet or knitting bag optional)!

  102. Even though I'm 59 I'm a baby knitter when it comes to lace. I'm signed up for your lace shawl class, but I haven't started it because I have a buying moratorium. I'm trying to organize my house so that I can sell off 90% of everything I own (I don't really know that I own it anymore, it's all underneath something else I put on top of it a few years ago, often before I took it out of the shopping bag). So my job currently is to de-thing the house, you don't make much money doing that, until you're ready for the moving sale. With luck, then I'll be RICH and go on a buying spree (oops, no, bad girl, no buying spree, no more hoarding) Well anyway, I'll have a nearly empty house, I'll know where everything in it is (yeah, right, maybe this is a fairy tale and my fairy godmother will take care of that part). Still, I have found tubs of yarn (SALE is a four letter word, I usta-couldn't resist it, but I'm learning) Literally I've got two 33 gal tubs full of wonderful yarn I couldn't pass up! But no lace needles, and I'm not allowed to go buy some. If I did I'd have to do something horrible to myself, like giving up chocolate cupcakes for a week. So, you see, I really need to win... want to trade for a barely used out of print Cat Bordhi book? I couldn't find the one's I originally bought and bought a second set, but cleaning has its rewards and now I have two copies!

These interchangeable look amazing! I have used/own Chiagoo fixed red cable circulars and LOVE them! I have been able to purchase one Signature Arts fixed circular, but can no longer afford this luxury. I would LOVE to win the Chiagoo set, as I have always been unsure about using any interchangables after hearing stories of loose cables and run away stitches! With Chiagoo's incredible red cords, this will hopefully never be a problem...I would LOVE to find out. How nice of Chiagoo to let you be the giver of amazing needles...Yeah! Pick me, teacher, pick me!

  114. I'm new to lace, so I really don't know why a sharp needle is important. Also, I only knit with good quality bamboo. Chiaogoo has some really awsome bamboo needles, so these would have to be the most bestest, greatest needles of all time for me to even look at them twice let alone knit with them. I would really like to try these, so here's hoping I win. Thanks for the opportunity! I'm basktnut on raverly and craftsy. BTW, I'm really loving your bead class!

  119. This sounds like the answer to my worst nightmare. I'm always worried about my current interchangeables cord breaking while I have hundreds of stitches on my needles. 120. I would love to win -- not for me, but for my disabled friend. She loves lace knitting and rarely has the resources to indulge in things like interchangeable needles. I bought myself some interchangeable needles a while ago and I wish she had a set for herself. Life isn't always fun or fair, but sometimes we can bring a little joy to those around us. She does that with her lovingly crafted lacework. I admire her. Like me, she is a young woman trying to find her place in the world. I just had a little better fortune than she did.

  126. I've been searching for a new set of interchangeable needles and these sound too good to be true! I have a set of Boyle but they keep coming apart, nothing like having to restart every time I try to knit a lace shawl, though one time I have to blame on the dog, she grabbed the ball of yarn and started running down the hallway, the cable came off and 3 days or work went with her. She was a tangled up mess,I was laughing too hard to scold her. I finally donated that set to the Church but warned them of the problem. I have a set of Addi's (a Mother's Day gift from my sons) but they are so slippery I drop stitches constantly. I hate to ask for another set for Christmas, but I just might have to if they are as great and wonderful as you say they are.
We might have to have a double ceremony because like you I'd marry them if they treat me nicely : )

  127. Wow! What an awesome prize! I have a few of the ChiaoGoo fixed circulars, and I love, love, love them. Those stainless steel, smooth as satin, tips are fabulous, and exquisitely sharp ~ plus, the size is printed on the needle.     OK. I need these because they will make my dog happy. Why? Because I will be happy using them and then my dog will be happy that I'm happy and then everything will be right with the world. At least for a little while. In my quiet corner of the universe that is full of love and baked goods but lacking in craft supplies. Besides, I'm just about to get up the courage to begin doing your lace class on Craftsy which I've already signed up for.     Sharper is much better;
    Not too slippery's good.
    Needles slightly etchy,
    Makes them just like wood.

    Nothing like a ChaioGoo
    With a perfect seam.
    Cables red and bendy;
    Using them's a dream.

  158. Hmmm....gotta tell ya, I'm so glad to see this review, because, quite honestly the name Chia Goo has only conjured up images of those Chia pets/heads ...I can still hear the advertisement... "Ch...ch...ch...chia". It would be lovely to replace that image with that of a set of interchangable needles that sing as I knit along. The small set is EXACTLY what I would use, since I knit a fair amount of lace and in general prefer knitting with lace and fingering weight yarns. If I win, you can contact me on Ravelry - my ID is finnknitter.

  159. I would like to win these needles to see if they will stay together for me. I have 2 different sets of interchangable needles, one cheap and one very expensive. Neither stays together. We have decided it is the way I hold my needles and basically, I unscrew them as I knit. We have even tried to have other people tighten them thinking maybe I wasn't tightening them propertly. No luck. I have been knitting away, as fast as my slow 32 year old RA fingers go and not realized, they had come apart until I wonder where my work has gone. I have 2 fantatic groups of ladies I knit with so they always are able to help me get my work back together, but it is still kind of disheartening. I don't get much done as it is because of my sore hands and if I have to redo because my needles fall apart, I get even less done.

    These would save my marriage...
You see, since I've been taking a course on craftsy called Knitting with beads, I've been lugging my "not too enthousiastic but still slowly tags along" husband on a full blown lace needle safari!
You see, I'm trying to catch the elusive wild "nupp" that seems to gravitate around lace needles... For now, I try to keep it close with a hook...
I've already lost a few good ladies on this mission... I'ts a dirty job you see. We get up early in the morning and rummage through bins that have yarn balls and accessories that are lost in time! I almost lost my son in a nearby chunky yarn bin! "The colors are so soft!" he still whispers in the night...

I hope that I am nearing the end of the expedition! So many saturdays have gone missing! :)

I'm sure I will pay dearly for all the time we've spent on this...
Save my marriage Laura! My husband is already talking payback and I hope he doesn't want more powertools!
    LOL

The pointy tips, size etched on the tip and the special slightly grip surface sound perfect. Fingers crossed that I am the lucky winner and can begin my adventure in lace knitting. 164. I'd say I would LOVE to win the small set...buuuut I just caved and pre-ordered the complete set. Your review totally sold me. Sadly I won't actually get my hands on them until Christmas because I had asked my family for a set of Addi Turbo Lace interchangeables, and these will be going straight into my parent's custody to be wrapped and show up under their tree on Christmas morning instead of the Addi's. Um. So maybe I do need to win these to tide me over until then...

  165. I love great interchangeables! I find that I do almost all my knitting on interchangeable needles but I have not seen a set that is incredible for lace. How wonderful! My biggest problem is locating which project has the needle/cable I am looking for to start the project I just have to do right now so I am always looking to add an extra set.
I am on Ravelry as mcallisterc.

  166. I took up knitting when my dad was in the hospital, it was a sad stressfl time and i needed some Zen. I have taught myself everything so far until last month when my five kids (not outa milk yet haha but only the little one wants to drink it) and my husband gave me your lace shawl class as a gift for being the wonderful not at all bitchy and naggy person that lives somewhere inside. I love the class and my seven week old often falls asleep to your soothing voice only to be woken up by the naughty verbal bullets that fire out of my mouth and that thankfully she isn't old enough to repeat when my lovely yarn snags on that stupid join of the totally useless needle that I have. I have even tried to file it with a nail file. A task that was meet with raised eyebrows and nervous looks exchanged between my hubby and oldest son. It would be best for the kids if mommy had a wonderful set of needles worthy of pretty words!

  167. I know it is unlikely that I will win these needles, but I would like to thank you for posting the review. I have not tried lace points yet, and this review may just convince me that it would be a good idea to start. It was interesting to read the different comments as many of them seem to be negative towards the ones I was considering buying. Who knows though, it may be my turn for a bit of luck.

  168. Hi Laura:
If you love them enough to marry them, they must be super! If they're as great as you say they are, then it wouldn't matter if they didn't take out the garbage or fix the doorknob on the back door. Then again, they would probably know to do those things without even being nagged!
I would love to win a set so that I could date them for awhile before deciding to marry them!

    (I'm "candybar" on Ravelry).

Thanks for the review and this give-away.

  169. I love the red lace needles and order a different size and length weekly. My husband would be very happy if I had all the lengths and needle sizes that I would ever need in one location

  170. I have the Boye's interchangeable set and the plastic part of the cables was already chipped when I purchased it.
    So...
I need this set so that my sister & friends will stop scolding me about my colorful language around their children when I'm knitting lace...

  171. Gush, drool...I am in love. I will only knit on circular needles. I hate dropping needles and chasing stitches. As I knit more lace I realize that I absolutley need needles with better joins.
and besides I need a second husband that is undemanding and only performs when I want/need him too! and file away in a drawer when not in use! LOL

  173. I would love these needles because I could use a set of lace needles for my fall projects. Also, I would look sexy knitting with red needles ;)

  174. Hi Laura! I am currently enrolled in your two classes on Craftsy and think you're a wonderful teacher. I have always used bamboo needles, but would LOVE to try the new Chiaogoo interchangeables as I knit your beautiful shawls. I have decided to put them on my wish list though. I read through everyone's posts and I think it would be great if "Unknown" with the disabled friend won them. It's an admirable trait to think of someone else rather than ourselves. --Lianneknits on Ravelry

  175. OMG! I, NaniBear from Ravelry, would love, love, love a chance to win these interchangeables! I was just whinging about my own interchangeables and how they kept loosening up while working on Trapeze! Arrrgh!
    Speaking of which:

  177. My experience (first) with lace knitting...the back seat of my friend's Honda Civic, driving on the Olympic Peninsula's Hwy 101, with Wendy Knits Lace, some Handspun yarn and bamboo needles. Reading a lace pattern. Bill, our driver made the comment that every time he looked at the cowl, it was getting smaller, not bigger. I cannot tell you how many times I unstitched and restitched that cowl, and it didn't start working for me until I made an emergency stop at a LYS and bought a pair of Addi's. A pricey lesson but ultimately the slender pointed tips made all the difference! Cannot wait to see these...

  178. I would love a set of Chiaogoo interchangeable needles! They are my favorite needles and my little yarn shop is always out! I end up ordering different sizes just to test gauge and adjust. It would make things so much easier if I had them all ready to go!

  179. I have been playing with lace knitting for about a year. I even taught myself to read charts. I'm very excited about that! I LOVED your class on knitting with beads on Craftsy. I still make a lot of mistakes but it would be much more fun to make them with a new set of interchangeable needles!

  180. Best review ever ... if there wasn't a chance to win a set from you, I'd want to rush out and buy both sets!

Hmmm, that might not have made you laugh ... DH also knits and our 1st interchangable set was a B-day gift for him, but I'm the one that uses it (they're metal), so we bought a wood set for him ... we both use it ... since he also loves red (especially red socks, which are amazingly hard to find to buy for a man) - I think this set is just what he needs to finally have a nice metal interchangeable set and to finally knit his great red sock yarn into his first socks ... and to knit lace, which he's done also.

Laughing yet? Cause I could say that winning the set would save me a lot of money when I have to keep buying needles for your wonderful KALs!

  183. My friends already think I am crazy because I have started making "art" with knitting needles. No so much because I have broken ones....no because I have a few old, horrible ones that aren't fit to knit with! Best of luck to all of us!

  184. Hi, Laura I'm the shawl that lives under the rocking chair. The woman that sits in the rocking chair put me here because she said " Oh my gosh thee needles #%€£ .I can't do this with these #%€£¥ needles. The #%€£¥ with this." So that's how I came to live under the rocking chair . If she wins the needles I get to live in the magical world of ABOVE .Uhm if she wins don't mention that I sent this email. Yours Truly,The Shawl

  185. I would love to try some of these needles. Even better when it's a giveaway. Why? I have to admit that part of it is because it makes me laugh just to hear people try and pronounce their name. You cheated - you just have spell it in the blog |).
