Crochet Chain Provisional Cast On Video

Many of my designs use a provisional cast on at some point within the pattern... so I decided it was time to show you how I work one!

The cast on uses smooth scrap yarn to get you started, you can choose to use a crochet hook, or not, that's up to you!

There is another technique by Lucy Neatby that I also use, just keep in mind that if you use her technique you will need to work one row after you work it so that you are set up correctly.

  3. Its like you read my mind! You seem to know
a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.

I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit,
but instead of that, this is magnificent blog. An excellent read.
    I will definitely be back.

  4. An intriguing discussion is definitely worth comment. There's no doubt that that you need to write more about this issue, it might not be a taboo matter but typically people do not speak about these issues. To the next! All the best!!

  6. I tend to use the method described by Neatby and I'm wondering if I use that why I need to knit an extra row (with the scrap yarn or the "real" yarn?) before beginning. When I use the Neatby method, and get the scrap yarn on the needles, I start knitting the real yarn on the end where the knot would be, so it's not different from what you're doing here I don't think. Anyway, your video is very clear. Thanks for posting it!

    1. You are welcome! And yes, with Lucy's crochet cast on, you need to work one more row with the working yarn to be ready to work the pattern!

    2. I was wondering that as well. I think the "extra row" is simply the act of knitting the first row with new yarn. Not just knitting another row with the scrap yarn. Very clever way to make a provisional cast on. But it seems to me to be a little more work to achieve the same end. I am wondering if someone can discuss a situation in which Lucy's cast on would be the preferential method?

  8. Do you knit European style? I knit throw. Will that cause a problem because the stitch will lay differently. Sunny

  9. I work it so the right leg is to the front of the needle and the left leg to the back... if your stitch is sitting with the left leg to the front then work into the back leg on the next row and that will ensure there is no twist in the stitch : )!
